A new organic material for polarization holographic recording--azo-dye methyl-orange, introduced in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)--is fabricated and investigated. It possesses all the good characteristics of the known polarization-sensitive materials--high sensitivity, reversibility, etc.--but excels them substantially in the magnitude of the photoinduced birefringence: delta n > 10(-3). This makes possible the recording of reversible polarization gratings with diffraction efficiency over 30%. Depending on the conditions of production and subsequent mechanical and thermal treatments the layers of methyl orange/PVA may also have intrinsic birefringence. In this paper the results of experimental investigations into the properties of this new material are reported.

Two types of photomodulation of orientations of liquid crystals (LCs) are reviewed: 1) order–disorder phase transitions of LCs induced by photochemical reactions of photochromic molecules and 2) order–order alignment change of LCs (change in LC directors) induced by photochemical reactions or without photochemical events. Both processes produce a large refractive-index modulation, which forms the basis of a range of photonic applications. Various modes of photomodulation of orientations of LCs with plausible mechanisms and their possible applications in photonics are described.

Photomodulation of liquid crystal orientations for photonic applications

All optical fabrication of Surface Relief Grating (SRG) on azobenzene functionalized polymer films is reviewed in this article. The uniqueness of the single step erasable photofabrication of large amplitude surface relief structures on azo polymer films is mainly due to the photoisomerization and photoanisotropic behavior of the azobenzene group. The design and synthesis of several classes of suitable azobenzene functionalized polymers for the SRG formation is presented. Experimental studies are carried out in a systematic manner to understand the chemical and physical intricacies involved in the SRG formation process. Structural requirements and their limitations for the efficient fabrication of SRGs on azo functionalized polymer films are also discussed. Understanding the fundamental mechanism of SRG formation on the azo functionalized polymer films enables us to make use of these structures in a variety of applications.

Surface relief structures on azo polymer films

Recent developments have enabled the practical realization of optical elements in which the polarization of light may vary spatially. We present an extension of Fourier optics-matrix Fourier optics-for understanding these devices and apply it to the design and realization of metasurface gratings implementing arbitrary, parallel polarization analysis. We show how these gratings enable a compact, full-Stokes polarization camera without standard polarization optics. Our single-shot polarization camera requires no moving parts, specially patterned pixels, or conventional polarization optics and may enable the widespread adoption of polarization imaging in machine vision, remote sensing, and other areas.

The history of human civilization is accompanied by the development of novel materials, from the period of natural stone, the bronze and iron age, to the modern times of synthetic materials and promising advanced materials. Liquid crystals (LCs) are one of such kind of materials that greatly infl uence our daily life, and which are not limited to displays such as TVs and personal computers. Being an intermediate phase of matter, LCs show characteristics of both controllable mobility of an isotropic liquid and ordered regularity of a crystalline solid. Combined with their photoresponsive properties, photocontrollable LC actuators have enabled a variety of applications in various fi elds, which include fl at panel displays, photonics, photo-driven devices, and more recently nanotechnology. The LC’s unique features provide soft materials in a liquid-crystalline state with interesting properties such as 1) selfassembly, 2) fl uidity with long-range order, 3) molecular and supramolecular cooperative motion (MCM and SMCM), 4) large birefringence and anisotropy in various physical properties (optical, mechanical, electrical and magnetic), 5) alignment change induced by external fi elds at surfaces and interfaces, and 6) deformation of LC elastomers (LCEs) in response to stimuli. Possible applications of polarization holography are demonstratedrecording of pairs of superimposed holograms with one spatial frequency; logical operations on two data arrays recorded simultaneously in the material; double-exposure holographic interferometry.

Some features of contrast improvement by low-frequency attenuation are described on the basis of a one-dimensional model. The properties deduced are verified experimentally in a coherent image-enhancement system. A rigid mixture of fluorescein in orthoboric acid is used as a spatial filter. Its photo-induced change permits variable optical density of the filter as well as variable filter dimensions in the spatial frequency plane.
