Among the early transition metals of the B groups III–VII, there are four spin-1/2 nuclei (89Y, 169Tm, 171Yb, 183W), but 89Y and 183W are the only ones for which a substantial amount of high-resolution NMR data has been reported. The other early transition metal nuclei have nuclear spins > 1/2 (and, with the exception of Ce, there is at least one magnetic isotope for each metal). Relaxation for these nuclei is governed by the quadrupolar mechanism, causing comparatively broad resonance signals unless the nuclear quadrupole moment is small (51V) and/or the local symmetry is such that the field gradient is very small (O h , T d , some cases of C3v ). A nuclear quadrupole has often been considered to seriously hamper NMR detection. In fact, there are a few nuclei with nuclear quadrupole moments so large as to cause severe problems (177Hf, 179Hf, 181Ta, 185Re, 187Re, 235U), but in general, the high relative receptivity for most of the nuclei, the large shielding sensitivity, and the fact that information on the electronic surroundings of the metal can be obtained by direct probing of the coordination center readily overcome disadvantages encountered with line broadening. Furthermore, the linewidth provides an additional parameter for the investigation of electronic interactions.

Early Transition Metals, Lanthanides and Actinides

Strontium-substituted ferromanganites of europium and thulium were investigated. Samples of Eu0.65Sr0.35Mn1 − x
 Fe
 x
 O3 and Tm0.65Sr0.35Mn1 − x
 Fe
 x
 O3 were prepared using ceramic processing. Based on the data from X-ray analysis, the samples with europium had a perovskite lattice, whereas the thulium samples were crystallized in an ilmenite lattice. Stratification of the magnetic subsystem was observed in the Mossbauer spectra of certain samples at T ≈ 300 K.

Electrical transport and magnetic behavior of the perovskite system Ln 0.8 Sr 0.2 (Co 1-x Fe x )O 3 , where Ln = La. Nd, Sm. Eu; x < 0.12 is reported. It is Shown that both substitutions of lanthanium by rare-earth ions and cobalt by iron lead to the destruction of ferromagnetic ordering and an increase of the magnetoresistance The La 0.8 Sr 0.2 (Co 1-x Fe x )O 3 (x ≤ 0.06) compounds exhibit a metal-insulator transition near the Curie temperature whereas rare-earth perovskites are semiconductors. In contrast to previous reports on the La 0.8 Sr 0.2 (Co 1-x Fe x )O 3 system we did not observe large magnetoresistance above 77 K.
