This paper presents a novel photocatalysis-assisted mechanical polishing method for cobalt-based alloy cladding layers using TiO2 nanoparticles. By leveraging the active oxygen species generated by the photocatalyst under illuminated conditions, surface oxidation reactions on cobalt-based alloys are initiated, thereby enhancing material removal efficiency. The underlying principles of photocatalytic oxidation are elucidated, particularly the promotion of oxidation by •OH when it interacts with the metal surface, leading to the formation of a CoO oxide film on the cladding layer surface and a subsequent reduction in surface hardness. An experimental platform was established, and research findings identified an etching time of 60 min and a TiO2 concentration of 10 wt% as optimal process parameters. Comparative analysis with pure mechanical polishing and chemical mechanical polishing revealed that photocatalysis-assisted mechanical polishing yielded superior surface roughness of 60 nm and a material removal rate of 63.8 μm/min.

The effect of temperature on the high-strain-rate response of Co-Al-W- base alloys: Experiments and modeling

Abstract To improve the accuracy of erosion prediction, the effect of subsequent particles impacting the same area while the first single particle rebounds from the substrate must be considered. This issue has rarely been considered in studies pertaining to erosion damage. In the present study, the ABAQUS software is used to investigate the erosion crater morphology and stress distribution on a target material subjected to overlapping impacts of spherical particles. Subsequently, the validated model is applied to investigate the effect of the overlapping impacts of particles on the target. Accordingly, the correlation between erosion severity and the impact locations of the two incident particles is quantified. The results show that the horizontal distance between two solid particle impact locations can significantly affect the erosion magnitude and pattern. The interactions of the resulting craters diminish when the horizontal distance exceeds 0.6 times the particle diameter. When the horizontal distance is approximately 0.06 times the particle diameter, the energy loss originating from collisions reaches the maximum, which modifies the crater morphology. The present study is expected to provide in-depth insights into erosion mechanisms and erosion modeling.

Numerical Simulation of Multiphase Flow Erosion in the Gas Well Relief Line Elbow under Supercritical Conditions

Sediment abrasion may cause the removal of material and efficiency loss to hydraulic machinery (hydro-turbine, pump, etc.), which may worsen the internal flow and endanger the safe operation of the machines. As abrasion is caused by the impact of sediment on the solid surface, the movement of particles determines the wear intensity. To understand the wear mechanism of hydraulic machinery, the motion characteristics of the asymmetric solid–liquid two-phase flow in a sediment-laden flow around NACA0012 cascades were studied. The laser particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) method was used to measure the flow of quartz particles with median diameters d50 of 82.7 μm, 65.9 μm, and 31.8 μm near the wall of cascades at an impact angle of 10° in a Venturi circuit. The flow characteristics and velocity slip between solid and liquid phases, as well as the effects of particle size and the Reynolds number on velocity slip, were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) the flow is asymmetrically distributed in front of the cascade’s leading edge at a 10° impact angle, and there is strong velocity slip between solid and liquid phases; (2) under the influence of particle inertia, the velocity of the solid phase is higher than that of the liquid phase in the deceleration stage, while the velocity of the solid phase is lower than that of liquid phase in the acceleration stage; (3) in the process of approaching the leading edge, the velocity difference between the solid and liquid phase increases by about 10% and the angle difference increases by about 8.8°.
