Dr Philippe Even the French physician who reported dramatic improvements in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) when they were treated with the immunosuppressant cyclosporin A claims he was pressured by the Ministry of Health into a premature public announcement of his findings Even agrees that the announcement of results after a weeks trial with 6 patients without controls was unwise and plans to set up a multicenter trial of cyclosporin A In the most acutely ill of the 6 AIDS patients treated with cyclosporin A for 9 days there was a 100-fold increase in the population of T-4 helper cells The other 5 patients showed at least a doubling in T-cell count since treatment Evens explanation for this finding is that cyclosporin A halts the activation of T-4 cells but does not inhibit the production of new T-4 cells by the bone marrow and the thymus gland He speculates that an occasional course of cyclosporin A might keep AIDS in check and perhaps eliminate it Other clinicians have expressed concern that since cyclosporin A mimics the immunosuppressive effects of AIDS itself the drug could actually exacerbate the disease in the long run Skepticism has been expressed about whether the rise in T-cell count observed in Evens patients indeed reflects regeneration of lymphocytes by the bone marrow This process is generally believed to require 3-4 weeks So far the US has not expressed interest in involvement in a projected international trial of cyclosporin A
