The motivation for formation of bunched electron beam at the electron cooler of CSRm is based on the three requirements. Firstly, the high energy electron cooling, especially, the ion beam with TeV energy, the bunched electron beam for cooling would be easier than the DC operating mode. Secondly, the electric field induced by the intensity modulated electron beam will be used for the suppression of instability developed in the high intensity ion beam after accumulation with the help of electron cooling, Thirdly, the electron beam was required to turn on and off in the different period of the atomic physics experiments. Some initial design and consideration were presented in this paper. And also the current situation and condition of CSRm electron cooler were described here. An off-line testbench will be established in the laboratory, and the test and the optimization will be explored in this experimentation. The validity of this system will be verified in the near future. The procedure of the modulation on the voltage of control electrode in the electron gun of the CSRm cooler was discussed. The scheme of off-line measurement was devised according to the progress.

FORMATION OF BUNCHED ELECTRON BEAM AT THE ELECTRON COOLER OF CSRm

The HESR is planned as an antiproton storage ring in the momentum range from 1.5 to 15 GeV/c. An important feature of this new facility is the combination of phase space cooled beams utilizing electron and stochastic cooling and dense internal targets (e.g. pellet targets). In this paper different beam dynamics issues like closed orbit correction, performance of cooled beams interacting with internal targets and luminosity considerations are discussed in respect of utilized simulation codes.

Beam dynamics studies for the high-energy storage ring*

The 2 MeV electron cooling system for COSY-Julich started operation in 2013 years. The cooling process was observed in the wide energy range of the electron beam from 100 keV to 1.256 MeV. Vertical, horizontal and longitudinal cooling was obtained at bunched and continuous proton beam. This report deals with electron cooling experiments at COSY with proton beam at energy 1.66 and 2.3 GeV. The proton beam was cooled at different regimes: RF on and off, barrier bucket RF, and cluster target on and off.

Recent Experiments With High Energy Electron Cooler in COSY

The high-energy storage ring (HESR) of the future International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt is planned as an antiproton synchrotron storage ring in the momentum range 1.5–15 GeV/ c . An important feature of this new facility is the combination of phase space cooled beams and dense internal targets (e.g. pellet targets), which results in demanding beam parameter requirements for two operation modes: high luminosity mode with peak luminosities to 2×10 32  cm −2  s −1 , and high-resolution mode with a momentum spread down to 10 −5 . To reach these beam parameters one needs a very powerful phase space cooling, utilizing high-energy electron cooling and high-bandwidth stochastic cooling. The effects of beam-target scattering and intra-beam interaction are investigated in order to study beam equilibria and beam losses for the two different operation modes.

Beam performance and luminosity limitations in the high-energy storage ring (HESR)

Results of experimental studies of the electron cooling of a proton beam at COSY (Juelich, Germany) and an ion beam at HIMAC (Chiba, Japan) are presented. Intensity of the ion beam is limited by two general effects: particle loss directly after the injection and development of instability in a deep cooled ion beam. Methods of the instability suppression, which allow increasing the cooled beam intensity, are described.

Intensive Ion Beams in Storage Rings with Electron Cooling

Electron cooling experiments have been carried out at HIMAC in order to develop new technologies in heavy-ion therapy and related researches. The cool-stacking method, in particular, has been studied to increase the intensity of heavy-ions. The maximum stack intensity was 2 mA, above which a fast ion losses occurred simulatneously with the vertical coherent oscillations. The instability depends on the working point, the stacked ion-density and the electron-beam density. The instability was suppressed by reducing the peak ion-density with RF-knockout heating.
