A simple protocol for latency-insensitive design is presented. The main features of the protocol are the efficient implementation of elastic communication channels and the automatable design methodology. With this approach, fine-granularity elasticity can be introduced at the level of functional units (e.g. ALUs, memories). A formal specification of the protocol is defined and an efficient scheme for the implementation of elasticity that involves no datapath overhead is presented. The opportunities this protocol opens for microarchitectural design are discussed.

Synthesis of synchronous elastic architectures

Elasticity in circuits and systems provides tolerance to variations in computation and communication delays. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of elastic circuits for those designers who are mainly familiar with synchronous design. Elasticity can be implemented both synchronously and asynchronously, although it was traditionally more often associated with asynchronous circuits. This paper shows that synchronous and asynchronous elastic circuits can be designed, analyzed, and optimized using similar techniques. Thus, choices between synchronous and asynchronous implementations are localized and deferred until late in the design process.

Elastic Circuits

De-synchronization appears as a new paradigm to automate the design of asynchronous circuits from synchronous netlists. This paper studies different protocols for de-synchronization and formally proves their correctness. Taxonomy of existing protocols for latch controllers is provided. In particular, four-phase handshake protocols devised for micro-pipelines are studied. A new controller with maximum concurrency for de-synchronization is also proposed. The applicability of de-synchronization on an implementation of the DLX microprocessor is also described and discussed.

Handshake protocols for de-synchronization

This paper focuses on the design and verification methods of distributed logic controllers supervising real-life processes. Such systems have to be designed very carefully and precisely in order to operate flawlessly and to meet user needs. We propose to use interpreted Petri nets as modeling formalism. A new design flow of distributed logic controllers is introduced. The methodology covers the development process from the specification stage to the final implementation of the controller in the distributed devices. In the proposed solution, the system is decomposed into separate modules that form a distributed system. Furthermore, the specification (before and after the decomposition process) is formally verified with the application of the model checking technique against predefined behavioral requirements. Finally, the system is implemented in real devices. The usage of formal methods and double model checking ensure the correct functionality of the designed distributed logic controller. The theoretical approach is supplemented by the practical experiments. Furthermore, the proposed idea is illustrated by an example of a smart home system.

Design and Verification of Real-Life Processes With Application of Petri Nets

In this paper, we introduce a new model for the representation of distributed asynchronous implementations of synchronous specifications. The model covers classical implementations, where a notion of global synchronization is preserved by means of signaling, and globally asynchronous, locally synchronous (GALS) implementations where the global clock is removed.

The new model offers a unified framework for reasoning about two essential correctness properties of an implementation: the preservation of semantics and the absence of deadlocks. We use it to derive criteria ensuring the correct deployment of synchronous specifications over GALS architectures. As the model captures the internal concurrency of the synchronous specification, our criteria support implementations that are less constrained and more efficient than existing ones.

Our work also reveals strong ties between abstract semantics-preservation properties and more operational ones like the absence of deadlocks.

Correct-by-Construction Asynchronous Implementation of Modular Synchronous Specifications

This paper presents a methodology to derive asynchronous circuits from optimized synchronous circuits by replacing the clock distribution tree by a handshaking network. A case study shows the applicability of the method and the potential benefits of de-synchronizing synchronous circuits.
