This paper addresses three major issues. Firstly, molecular taxonomy and its application to elucidate the biodiversity and biogeography of entomopathogenic nematodes is considered. Accurate identification is fundamental for understanding biodiversity, and because these nematodes are morphologically conservative, molecular techniques will provide the insights necessary to develop a robust, morphologically based taxonomy. Secondly, a review of the knowledge on their biogeography and habitat specificity, including a consideration of the limitations to the available data is given. Much of the information is presented in two tables which summarize the distributions of recognized species at continental and national levels. Thirdly, this paper provides a brief consideration of the Convention on Biological Diversity and its implications for future work with entomopathogenic nematodes and biological control.

Entomopathogenic Nematodes: Biodiversity, Geographical Distribution and the Convention on Biological Diversity

Entomopathogenic nematodes were isolated from soil samples collected during three separate surveys, two in the United Kingdom and one in the Netherlands. The nematodes were identified by their restriction fragment length polymorphisms on hybridization of Southern blots with a ribosomal DNA repeat unit clone. A total of eight steinernematid species/RFLP types and two heterorhabditids were isolated. The distributions of the majority of these species/RFLP types were significantly different between the three surveys and some of the species displayed a close association with certain habitat types.

Progress on entomopathogenic nematology research: A bibliometric study of the last three decades: 1980–2010

A greater knowledge of the morphology and the development of the infective third larval stage of Neoaplectana bibionis Bovien, 1937, a parasite of arthropods, makes it possible to recognise the second larval stage and present a description of all the developmental stages in the life cycle of the species. Four larval stages can be recognised. L1 hatches from the egg. In a suitable host, when the population density is low, it develops directly into L4. When the population density is high, it develops into L2. The L2 is a non-feeding stage that precedes the resistant infective L3 larvae. L3 is free-living and characterised by a distinct lateral field with nine longitudinal lines. In the L4 the sex can be recognised. The first adults developing in a fresh host are usually larger than those developing later. Generally no more than two generations are completed in one insect. Youngg females in a fresh host lay eggs. In older females, and in females developing in a decaying host, endotokia matricida is common. A redescription of the species is presented on the basis of a population from New Zealand reared on Galleria mellonella larvae. All stages of the life cycle are described and illustrated. Proposed new synonymy includes Neoaplectana leueaniae Hoy, 1954 a synonym of N. bibionis Bovien, 1937 and Neoapleetana affinis Bovien, 1937 a synonym of N. menozzi Travassos, 1932.

Biology, Life Cycle and Redescription of, Neoaplectana bibionis Bovien, 1937(Nematoda: Steinernematidae)

A new strain of Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) was isolated in La Rioja (Spain) from larvae of Bibio hortulanus (Diptera: Bibionidae). A comparative morphometric analysis of this new strain and four additional S. feltiae isolates was performed. Although significant differences in morphometric measurements were observed, PCR-RFLP profiles and sequence analysis of the ITS region of rDNA confirmed the identity of the new strain as A2 RFLP type of S. feltiae. A comparative morphometric study among nematodes from three hosts, Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and B. hortulanus, was conducted. Ecological characterization of the Rioja isolate was performed in G. mellonella larvae. Larval mortality was 75.3 and 78.12% in penetration and sand column assays, respectively, and the percentage of penetrating infective juveniles was 12.0 and 2.8% in these assays. Larval mortality in the one-on-one bioassay was 4.2%, and in exposure-time bioassays, it was 50% at 11.25 hours. Relationships between morphometric characteristics and host mortality are discussed for this new strain of entomopathogenic nematode.

Morphological and Ecological Characterization of Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) Rioja Strain Isolated from Bibio hortulanus (Diptera: Bibionidae) in Spain.

In. the spring of I97I, Neoaplectana bibionis Bovien was re-isolated from larvae and pupae of Bibio hortulanus L. and other bibionids from 3 localities in Denmark. Third stage infective larvae were recovered and used to initiate laboratory cultures. When nematodes were injected into the mouth of the greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonella L., they quickly penetrated into the hemocoel of the living insects and brought about their death. Successive nematode generations also occurred on artificial media used for rearing Neoaplectana carpocapsae Weiser. A specific rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from the intestine of infective stage larvae and probably has the same relationship to the nematode as N. carpocapsae has to its symbiotic bacterium, Achromobacter nematophilus. This nematode may make an excellent candidate for biological control programs involving soil insects.
