The antenna pattern synthesis problem is of the utmost importance in almost every kind of antenna applications. Therefore, a very large number of contributions have appeared on this subject. But virtually all of them deal with simplified versions of the complete synthesis problem, wherein the degrees of freedom available in principle are strongly reduced, and/or idealized design criteria or requirements are considered. In this paper we present a formulation which allows us to overcome this fragmentation of the synthesis problem. A clear and direct description of the performance actually required by the antenna and a representation of the radiating properties of the antenna as a system allows us to formulate the synthesis problem as an intersections finding problem, i.e., to find a common element between a number of sets, each one containing elements fulfilling part of the requirements. This allows a completely general and flexible formulation of the problem, independent of the actual structure of the antenna. Then the practical implementation of this formulation is widely discussed, showing how an efficient solution procedure can be devised. The implications of the well-known ill-conditioning of the synthesis problem are also discussed. In order to show how the approach works and to assess its flexibility and power, a couple of significant examples are included, namely, a phase-only reconfigurable array and a shaped reflector synthesis. These examples are unconventional since no a priori choice of the intensity distribution (for the array case) or of the feed cluster (for the reflector case) is required. The method presented is able to exploit all the available degrees of freedom in order to fulfill the design requirements. >

Antenna pattern synthesis: a new general approach

Communication link and target ranges for satellite communications (SATCOM) and space-based sensors (e.g. radars) vary from approximately 400–1000 km for low earth orbits (LEO) to 35,800 km for geosynchronous orbits (GEO). At these long ranges, large antenna gains are required and most legacy systems use high gain reflectors with beams that are either fixed or mechanically steered. However, for some radio frequency (RF) sensor applications, mechanical beam scanning has inherent limitations.

The aim of this work is to present the ICARA (induced-current analysis of reflector antennas) software, which is able to predict the behavior of reflector antennas using the physical optics method. The software offers different options for antenna configurations, single and array feed models, and far-field or aperture-field analysis.

We present the projection matrix method for shaped beam synthesis in a general array of different size elements. The method relies on orthogonal projection of the desired far-field intensity vector onto the space spanned by the far-field intensity vectors of the array elements. It is found that for a uniform convergence of the solution, the far-field sample space must be extended beyond the coverage region; otherwise the projection matrix becomes ill conditioned. A general guideline for the far-field sample space is provided. The method, with necessary amendments, is then employed successfully for a reflector surface synthesis. The method is found to be several times faster than the gradient search method commonly used for beam synthesis. Numerical results for array and shaped reflector syntheses are shown and the advantages discussed

Projection Matrix Method for Shaped Beam Synthesis in Phased Arrays and Reflectors

Various aspects of reflector surface distortion compensation are explored by first assuming the reflector distortion is given and then designing the compensating feed array. The sensitivity of boresight directivity to changing surface distortion parameters for fixed feed-array geometries is examined. It is found that feed array compensation is feasible only for distortions with low spatial frequency content, such as those distortions induced by thermal and gravitational effects. The optimum directivity methods for determining element excitation is found to yield slightly better values of directivity than those for the conjugate field matching (CMF) technique. However, the CFM technique has, in general, much lower sidelobe levels and lends itself to simple realization in hardware. In view of these results, distortion compensation using an array feed is concluded to be a reasonable approach to improving antenna performance for large, space-based reflector antennas that are not easily accessible for tuning and have time-dependent surface distortions. >

The directivity of a reflector antenna deteriorates as the feed moves away from the focal point for beam scanning. This deterioration can be substantially reduced if a cluster feed instead of a single feed is used to control a beam. A closed-form solution is presented for the cluster excitation to achieve the optimum directivity. For an offset 108 \lambda parabolic reflector scanning 10 beamwidths, the optimum-directivity achieved by a 19-element (seven-element) cluster is 12 dB (8 dB) higher than that of a single element. Comparison of the optimum-directivity design and the popular conjugate field matching design is made. When the cluster spacing d is greater than 1 \lambda , it is found that the optimum directivity is higher than that of conjugate field matching (CFM) scheme by an insignificant amount, although the excitations of two designs can be quite different. For d , the optimum design may exhibit the supergain phenomenon, namely, extremely high directivities achieved by an oscillatory cluster excitation.
