Classification and quantification of excavated soil and construction sludge: A case study in Wenzhou, China

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is one of the largest contributors to global waste streams, simultaneously posing significant environmental and resource management challenges. The management of CDW, particularly its potential for energy recovery and industrial symbiosis, has garnered increasing attention as part of a circular economy approach. This comprehensive review explores global practices in CDW management, analysing theoretical developments, technological advancements, and emerging resource recovery and reuse trends. Background: CDW accounts for more than a third of all waste generated in the EU. A wide variety of materials, such as concrete, bricks, wood, glass, metals, and plastics, make it a very un-homogenous waste stream with high potential for material recovery through different approaches. Methods: This review draws on an extensive analysis of scientific literature, case studies, and industry reports to assess current practices in the CDW stream and assessment of the feasibility of energy recovery, industrial symbiosis, and object reconstruction. Results: The originality of the current research is based on a Latvian case study on CDW management that provides valuable insights into household-level practices and progress towards relevant UN SDGs. Conclusions: Various CDW streams have an undeniable potential for valorization through various approaches. Currently, the most common approach is recovery and recycling, although CDW has the potential to broaden its application within the circular economy framework. For instance, industrial symbiosis is a solution that can not only boost the valorization of CDW but also significantly increase material circularity. 

A Comprehensive Review on Construction and Demolition Waste Management Practices and Assessment of This Waste Flow for Future Valorization via Energy Recovery and Industrial Symbiosis

Controlling is a crucial stage in achieving a project target, covering aspects of cost, quality, and time. In the construction industry, the cost aspect is often the main focus. The project of Duta Mall 2 (DM 2) is the development of an existing building and the cost aspect is a major concern to the owner. Dynamic internal and external factors of the DM 2 project cause the project control to be quite difficult, with the materials becoming the most dominant factor in construction cost. Cost control starts from reinforced concrete work materials, consisting of ready mixed concrete, concrete steel, wire, plywood, timber, and nails. Bad control of material purchasing can lead to cost escalation, degradation of material quality, and impact on the execution schedule of works. This research was conducted to obtain quantitative correlations between material components based on reinforced concrete works material supply data. From these data, some linear regression models can be designed to obtain a more accurate and effective prediction of material volume needs in the future. Model equations can be applied to control material demand, measure waste, reference of material volume in arranging the project cost budget, in addition to the process in the control procedure of the request for goods (materials and equipment).

A Control Model for Reinforced Concrete Work Materials on the Construction of Duta Mall 2

The construction industry is one of the most important industries for social and economic growth, as well as a source of wealth. Unfortunately, the construction industry has considerable costs, time, and quality issues, necessitating being resolved. This problem also happened in the Malaysian construction industry, mostly to meet the demands of infrastructure projects. Furthermore, over-processing refers to extra work done during the construction process that increases the likelihood of a project failing. This over-processing is caused by the consultant teams’ slow response time when a problem develops, as well as the site’s poor management system implementation. Lean construction (LC) is the alternative in resolving this non- physical construction wastes. LC is a constant enhancement to the construction processes in sustaining the organisation’s growth and profitability. This research aims to develop an LC tools framework that beneficial to future LC practitioners. This paper seeks to identify the most generated over-processing construction waste and the most LC tools to reduce over-processing construction waste on the site. This research uses a quantitative method approach, and the questionnaire survey has been sent to 310 G7 contractors registered with the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) in Malaysia. A total of 116 questionnaires were returned, with a response rate of 37.4%. The findings revealed that the long approval process was the source of the majority of the site’s over-processing construction waste. Hence, management contracts, standard forms, total quality management, concurrent engineering and teamwork were the five most implemented LC tools by the LC practitioners in reducing over-processing waste. It is hoped that the outcomes of this research, able to help the LC practitioners deliver their projects. Thus, it would develop the future’s construction productivity towards a better quality of life.

Reducing Over-processing Construction Waste by Using Lean Construction Tools in The Malaysian Construction Industry

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste account for an oversized share of all solid waste generated worldwide. Statistical data confirm that, globally, 10-30% of waste originates from construction and demolition works. The types of waste from construction activities are wood, metals, concrete waste and mixed wastes. Waste generation continues to increase with the economy and population growth. A great challenge is providing more waste disposal facilities such as landfills to treat the waste. Rapid urbanization and insufficient attention to C&D waste generation, particularly in developing countries like Malaysia, have contributed to an urgent need for additional research on waste generation as there is a lack of information. The aim of this study is to predict the construction waste generation for the peninsular of Malaysia by quantifying construction waste generation data for Kuala Lumpur and to estimate the construction waste generation in 2016 for the peninsular of Malaysia. The estimation approach used was the proportion method with 20% of total sites in each state. Indirect waste measurement method was used to estimate waste generation. Total waste generation for Kuala Lumpur was around 6,101.46 metric tons. The predicted total amount of C&D waste generated for residential projects throughout Malaysia Peninsular is 63,101.93 metric tons. The initial prediction of construction waste generation for Malaysia Peninsular can be used as a baseline for future study.
