We report a persistent phosphor of KY3(1−x)Tb3xF10 (KY3F10:xTb3+) synthesized by solid-state reaction for x-ray or cathode-ray tubes. The phosphorescence consists of a group of blue and green emission lines originating from D53→F7J and D54→F7J transitions of Tb3+, respectively. The phosphorescent emitting color can be tuned from blue to green by gradually increasing Tb3+ concentrations, which is attributed to the enhanced D53-D54 relaxation through the cross relaxation between two Tb3+ ions, as described by of (D53,F76)-(D54,F70). The Tb3+ concentration dependent phosphorescence spectra are well simulated based on the analysis of luminescence dynamical processes using the Judd–Ofelt theory and rate equations concerning the D53 and D54 levels. The energy charge and release pattern of the phosphor are presented and a 10% decay time is 29 s. The measurement of the thermoluminescence glow curve gives convincing evidence for the traps analysis.

Color tunable phosphorescence in KY3F10:Tb3+ for x-ray or cathode-ray tubes

We use high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and high-resolution optical Fourier spectroscopies to characterize hyperfine interactions of the impurity Ho${}^{3+}$ ions in KY${}_{3}$F${}_{10}$ crystals. Well-resolved hyperfine structure is observed in the EPR spectra for several transitions within the ground ${}^{5}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{I}_{8}$ multiplet of the Ho${}^{3+}$ ion and in the optical spectra for many lines in the infrared and visible ranges. The observed hyperfine patterns and field dependences of the resonance frequencies in the EPR spectra are well reproduced by calculations based on the crystal field (CF) theory. This favors reliability of calculated energies and wave functions of the electron-nuclear states within the ground and excited levels of Ho${}^{3+}$ in KY${}_{3}$F${}_{10}$. Finally, the dc magnetic susceptibility of the concentrated KHo${}_{3}$F${}_{10}$ crystal taken from literature is successfully modeled in the temperature range 0.01--20 K, using CF parameters of the impurity Ho${}^{3+}$ ions in KY${}_{3}$F${}_{10}$.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of Sm3+ and Yb3+ ions in KY3F10 single crystals have been measured at X-band microwave frequencies and low temperatures. The EPR lines have been fitted to a tetragonal spin Hamiltonian to determine effective g-values (g∥,g⊥). The observed g-values, (g∥ = 0.714(2),g⊥ = 0.11(1)), for Sm3+ are in agreement with those calculated via crystal-field J-mixing of the first excited-state multiplet 6H7/2 into the groundstate multiplet 6H5/2 of Sm3+ as the second-order perturbation. On the other hand, the observed g-values, (g∥ = 5.363(5), g⊥ = 1.306(2)) for Yb3+ are coincident with those calculated via mixing in only the groundstate multiplet 2F7/2 as the first-order perturbation because the first excited-state multiplet 2F5/2 lies above ~10 000 cm-1 from the groundstate. The groundstate eigenfunctions of Sm3+ and Yb3+ obtained from the EPR results are close to those calculated from a C4v symmetry crystal-field analysis applied to their optical transitions. The distortions of the Sm3+ and Yb3+ complexes in KY3F10 are discussed in the term of the crystal-field Hamiltonian in comparison with LiYF4.

An electron paramagnetic resonance study on Sm3+ and Yb3+ in KY3F10 crystals

Absorption, luminescence and MCD spectra of KY3F10:Er3+ have been recorded at different temperatures between liquid helium and room temperature. Crystal-field and intensity calculations are presented. Special attention is paid to the three mutually perpendicular C4v sites in the KY3F10 host crystal and to the consequences for the parameter sets.

Spectroscopic properties of KY3F10:Er3+

Polarized absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of an LiErF4 single crystal have been recorded at different temperatures between liquid-helium temperature and room temperature. Assignments are made assuming D2d symmetry for the coordination polyhedron around the trivalent erbium ion. The energy level scheme is parametrized in terms of 20 free-ion and 5 Bqk crystal-field parameters. The optimized set of crystal-field parameters is: B02 = 303.3 cm−1, B04 = −773.3 cm−1, B44 = −935.0 cm−1, B06 = −59.9 cm−1 and B46 = −665.9 cm−1. Intensities of transitions between crystal-field levels are parametrized by a set of Atpλ intensity parameters. The reliability of the parameter sets is tested by graphical simulation of the experimental MCD spectra.
