Research was conducted to investigate the modification of natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using amino silanes, namely (γ-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and diethoxydimethyl silane (DMS). The study investigates the influence of modified halloysite nanotubes, specifically APTES-HNTs and DMS-HNTs, on the diverse properties of nanocomposites produced from a blend of natural rubber (NR) and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM). The properties examined included cure characteristics, tensile properties, hardness, rebound resilience, and compression set qualities of the NR/EPDM nanocomposites. Swelling and cross-link density measurements, abrasion resistance analysis, and fracture morphology examination using FESEM were also performed to validate the experimental outcomes. Utilizing APTES-HNTs as fillers resulted in noteworthy improvements in multiple attributes such as tensile strength, stress at 100% elongation, abrasion resistance, hardness, tear strength, and curing behavior. Notably, the APTES-HNTs filled nanocomposites demonstrated superior resistance to swelling when compared to both HNTs and DMS-HNTs. The enhanced interaction between the filler and rubber matrix, owing to the increased contact surface area, contributed to advancements in mechanical properties and resistance to swelling. Comparing nanocomposites with a base vulcanizate, the incorporation of 10 parts per hundred rubber (phr) APTES-HNTs led to a 36% reduction in abrasion loss. The research findings indicated that the addition of 8 phr APTES-HNTs could potentially increase tensile strength, elongation at break, and stress at 100% elongation by approximately 112%, 31%, and 66%, respectively. 

An Investigation on the Effect of the Surface Modifications and HNTs Loading on the Cure behaviours, Abrasion Resistance, Mechanical and Morphological Properties of NR/EPDM Nanocomposites

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were effectively surface-treated with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS), promoting interactions with the aluminol and silanol groups present on the nanotubes’ edges and surfaces. The modified HNTs (mHNTs) were then utilized in the preparation of nanocomposites with silicone rubber vulcanizate. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of mHNTs loading on various aspects of the resulting rubber nanocomposites, covering parameters such as cure characteristics, compression set, swelling behavior, abrasion resistance, and mechanical properties. Precise measurements were carried out using the oscillating disc rheometer (ODR), solvent immersion technique, DIN abrader, and tensile testing. In summary, the incorporation of mHNTs significantly enhanced the characteristics and performance of the silicone rubber nanocomposites, improving the tensile modulus, tensile strength, and tear strength. Furthermore, the silicone rubber/mHNTs nanocomposites exhibited enhanced resistance to swelling due to interactions between the rubber matrix and mHNTs.

Influence of Modified Nanosilica on the Performance of NR/EPDM Blends: Cure Characteristics, Mechanical Properties and Swelling Resistance

In an in-situ surface modification method, nano-silica (NS) underwent treatment with bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide, often referred to as TESPT, a commercially available SCA (silane coupling agent). This produced surface-functionalized NS, also known as modified nanosilica (mNS). The influence of using this mNS as a filler in styrene-butadiene rubber/acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (SBR/NBR) composites was examined in this study. The results show that the silanol groups in TESPT form chemical connections with the surface of the NS, which significantly increases the rubber-matrix nanocomposite's curing efficiency and improves its mechanical properties. The reason for this enhancement is the in-situ surface modification of the NS by the SCA, which significantly raises the filler's miscibility and compatibility with the rubber matrix. The SBR/NBR nanocomposites filled with NS and mNS exhibited notable enhancements in tensile and tear strength, demonstrating improvements of 161% and 70%, respectively, in comparison to SBR/NBR vulcanizates.
