Structure of the genetic diversity in black poplar (Populus nigra L.) populations across European river systems: Consequences for conservation and restoration
Marinus J. M. Smulders,Joan Cottrell,François Lefèvre,J.R. van der Schoot,Paul Arens,Ben Vosman,H.E. Tabbener,Fabrizio Grassi,T. Fossati,Stefano Castiglione,V. Krystufek,Silvia Fluch,Kornel Burg,Barbara Vornam,A. Pohl,K. Gebhardt,N. Alba,D. Agúndez,C. Maestro,Eduardo Notivol,R. Volosyanchuck,M. Pospiskova,Sándor Bordács,J. Bovenschen,B.C. van Dam,H.P. Koelewijn,David Halfmaerten,Bart Ivens,J. Van Slycken,A. Vanden Broeck,Veronique Storme,Wout Boerjan +31 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the restoration of thenatural habitat and the re-creation of the natural dynamics of the floodplain, in combination with sufficiently sized and spaced natural populations as seed sources, are the most important measures for sufficient natural regeneration and conservation of this species in the future.

Ex-situ conservation of Black poplar in Europe: genetic diversity in nine gene bank collections and their value for nature development
Veronique Storme,A. Vanden Broeck,Bart Ivens,David Halfmaerten,J. Van Slycken,Stefano Castiglione,Fabrizio Grassi,T. Fossati,Joan Cottrell,H.E. Tabbener,François Lefèvre,C. Saintagne,Silvia Fluch,V. Bovenschen,B.C. van Dam,J.R. van der Schoot,Ben Vosman,Wout Boerjan,Marinus J. M. Smulders +29 more
TL;DR: The diversity was largest in the material collected from the regions in Southern Europe, and the most unique alleles were identified in the Danube region (Austria), the Rhône region (France), Italy, the Rijn region (The Netherlands), and the Ebro region (Spain).

Postglacial migration of Populus nigra L.: lessons learnt from chloroplast DNA
Joan Cottrell,V. Krystufek,H.E. Tabbener,A.D. Milner,T. Connolly,L. Sing,Silvia Fluch,Kornel Burg,François Lefèvre,P. Achard,Sándor Bordács,K. Gebhardt,Barbara Vornam,Marinus J. M. Smulders,A. TL;DR: In this paper, a common analysis based on the restricted fragments produced by five primer pairs was used to determine the cpDNA haplotype of 637 samples obtained from genebank collections established in nine European countries.

Recommendations for riparian ecosystem management based on the general frame defined in EUFORGEN and results from EUROPOP
François Lefèvre,Sándor Bordács,Joan Cottrell,K. Gebhardt,M.J.M. Smulders,A. Vanden Broeck,Barbara Vornam,B.C. van Dam +7 more
- 01 Jan 2002
TL;DR: In this paper, the Populus nigra Network, within EUFORGEN, was initiated to initiate in situ conservation for this species, in which the challenge, in that case, is to monitor the genetic resources of a pioneer species in a dynamic ecosystem.

Genetic inventory of black poplar populations in the Upper Rhine floodplains: conclusions for conservation of an endangered plant species.
K. Gebhardt,A. Pohl,Barbara Vornam +2 more
- 01 Jan 2001
TL;DR: The development of riparian ecosystems along the Upper Rhine has gained a lot of interest during the course of centuries and in former times it was much more common to stabilize dams with fascine-work than it is nowadays because there was no machinery to transport heavy stone material.
