Carbon nanotubes, a novel form of carbon discovered in 1991, have been rapidly recognized as one of the most promising electron field emitters ever since the first emission experiments reported in 1995. Their potential as emitters in various devices has been amply demonstrated during the last five years, and recent developments of production techniques are likely to trigger future applications. This report reviews the state of the art of the current research on the electron field emission properties of carbon nanotubes and surveys their ability to provide single or multiple electron sources.

Field emission from carbon nanotubes: the first five years

An improved process for fabricating nanotube field emitter structures is provided, in which the nanotubes protrude from a supporting base material to improve emission properties. The resulting emitter structure are useful in a variety of devices, including microwave vacuum tube devices and flat-panel, field-emission displays. To attain the protruding nanotube emitter structure, according to one embodiment of the invention, nanotubes and metal particles are mixed and consolidated into a compact, and the compact is then sectioned to expose a substantial number of nanotube ends. A layer of the metal is selectively etched from the sectioned surface, leaving the exposed nanotubes protruding from the surface. The extent of protrusion is at least twice the average diameter of the nanotubes, advantageously at least ten times the average diameter of the nanotubes.

The article of manufacture comprises a macroscopic mounting element capable of being manipulated or observed in a macroscale environment, and a nanoscale nanotube assembly attached to the mounting element. The article permits macroscale information to be provided to or obtained from a nanoscale environment. A method for making a macroscopically manipulable nanoscale devices comprises the steps of (1) providing a nanotube-containing material; (2) preparing a nanotube assembly device having at least one carbon nanotube for attachment; and (3) attaching said nanotube assembly to a surface of a mounting element.

The emission properties of aligned nanotube arrays are improved by truncating the ends of the nanotubes. Truncation provides nanotubes having a height within, for example, 30% of the average truncated nanotube height, as well as ends substantially free of end caps. The cap-free ends provide desirable field concentration, and the height uniformity increases the number of participating nanotubes.
