Funketiketten auf RFID-Basis, multimediafahige Handys und Chips in Kreditkarten und Ausweispapieren sind dabei nur die ersten Vorboten des kommenden Zeitalters des Ubiquitous Computing: Denn nicht nur Mikroprozessoren und ganze Computer werden immer leistungsfahiger, kleiner und preiswerter, sondern bald lassen sich auch uber Funk miteinander kommunizierende Sensoren, die ihre Umgebung erfassen, sehr billig in miniaturisierter Form herstellen und millionenfach in die Umwelt einbringen oder unsichtbar in Gegenstande einbauen. Zusammen mit neuen Technologien zur Ortsbestimmung bekommen so gewohnliche Dinge eine noch nie da gewesene Qualitat — diese konnen dann wissen, wo sie sich gerade befinden, welche anderen Gegenstande oder Personen in der Nahe sind und was in der Vergangenheit mit ihnen geschah. Aus ihrem Kontext konnen sie vielleicht sogar einfache Schlusse uber die Situation, in der sie sich befinden, ableiten. Langfristig entsteht so ein „Internet der Dinge“, das gewaltige Auswirkungen auf viele Lebensbereiche haben durfte.

Die technische Basis für das Internet der Dinge

Tekes, the National Technology Agency of Finland, is the main financing organisation for applied and industrial R&D in Finland. Funding is granted from the state budget. Tekes' primary objective is to promote the competitiveness of Finnish industry and the service sector by technological means. Activities aim to diversify production structures, increase productivity and exports, and create a foundation for employment and social well-being. Tekes supports applied and industrial R&D in Finland to the extent of some EUR 390 million, annually. The Tekes network in Finland and overseas offers excellent channels for cooperation with Finnish companies, universities and research institutes. Technology programmes – part of the innovation chain The technology programmes for developing innovative products and processes are an essential part of the Finnish innovation system. These programmes have proved to be an effective form of cooperation and networking for companies and the research sector. Technology programmes promote development in specific sectors of technology or industry, and the results of the research work are passed on to business systematically. The programmes also serve as excellent frameworks for international R&D cooperation. Currently, a total of about 50 extensive national technology programmes are under way. Foreword Information society, or knowledge society, is an example of those widely used terms that have different meaning for different people. Although information society related research and technology development is currently one of the main stars in the sky, we do not have a clear picture of it, or its position. This report is the result of the mapping of thoughts and visions of large number of thinkers in three continents about the information society and research related to it. The report is part of the activities during the preparation of research cooperation program between Finland and the research This report gives two views to the information society related research. The first view outlines some of the key areas, themes and activities that have taken place this far. The second view suggests a set of maps and paradigms to be usable in defining research projects and strategies. If we stay in traditional research sectors and in their definitions, we are in a big risk of missing those things we should find when building up our picture of the current day and visions for the future. Scenarios for Europe’s media industry: employment trends and changing skills

This article presents some clues to the future evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their implications for employment. It draws on results of several finished and two ongoing projects within IPTS (DUCATEL, BURGELMAN, HOWELLS, BOHLIN & OTTISCH and DUCATEL & BURGELMAN). The article first looks at some key ICT trends identified by the ICT and IS Panel of the Futures Project. These are then discussed in relation to recent debates on skill shortages for ICT professionals and their implications for future employment patterns. Second, we provide a short analysis of trends in the new media content sector and their implications for employment. These two steps provide a basis for raising some research issues on employment and ICTs, which we do in the third section.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) ist ein Produkt der Konvergenz dreier Schlusseltechnologien: „Ubiquitous Computing“,1 allgegenwartige Kommunikationssysteme und intelligente benutzerfreundliche Schnittstellen. In der AmI-Vision werden die Menschen von intelligenten Schnittstellen umgeben sein, die von allgegenwartiger Computer- und Netzwerktechnologie unterstutzt werden und die eingebettet sind in alltagliche Gebrauchsgegenstande wie Mobel, Kleidung, Fahrzeuge, Strasen und intelligente Materialien oder sogar in Partikel von Substanzen zu Dekorationszwecken wie beispielsweise Farbe. AmI steht fur eine nahtlose Umgebung von Computertechnik, fortschrittlicher Netzwerktechnologie und spezifischen Schnittstellen. Es nimmt anwesende Personen sowie ihre spezifischen Personlichkeitsmerkmale und Charaktereigenschaften wahr, kummert sich um ihre Bedurfnisse und ist in der Lage, auf intelligente Art und Weise auf Wunsche zu reagieren, die verbal oder durch Gesten artikuliert wurden. Daruber hinaus kann es sogar intelligente Dialoge fuhren. „Ambient Intelligence“ zeichnet sich zudem durch unsichtbare Gegenwartigkeit aus: uberall und doch in unserem Bewusstsein und zugleich nirgends, solange wir es nicht benotigen. Die Interaktion sollte in entspannter und angenehmer Atmosphare erfolgen und keinen erheblichen Lernaufwand fur den Nutzer implizieren.
