The mechanical behaviour of a reconstituted unsaturated silty clay
TL;DR: In this paper, a novel method of controlling suction by means of air circulation in combination with independent suction measurement is described, which has been incorporated in a standard triaxial stress path cell, and could easily be incorporated in other standard apparatus such as the direct shear box and oedometer.

Soil matrix suction: some examples of its measurement and application in geotechnical engineering
TL;DR: In this article, the average in-situ effective stress is estimated using measurements of soil matrix suction, which can be used to identify disturbance and/or desiccation in samples removed from the ground.

A new approach to osmotically controlled oedometer testing
K. Dineen,John Burland +1 more
- 01 Jun 1995
TL;DR: In this paper, a new approach to the application of the osmotic technique to control suction in oedometer testing is described, which is controlled at the base of the sample and measured independently at the top using the Imperial College tensiometer.

Suction and volume changes of a bentonite-enriched sand
K. Dineen,J. E. Colmenares,A. Ridley,John Burland +3 more
- 01 Oct 1999
TL;DR: In this article, the suction and volume change characteristics of a bentonite-enriched sand were investigated. But the authors focused on the long-term behavior of these materials.

The Suitability of the Osmotic Technique for the Long-term Testing of Partly Saturated Soils
TL;DR: The results suggest that with the correct choice of semi-permeable membrane and solution, it should be possible to use the osmotic technique in a satisfactory manner to perform any desired test on partly saturated soils, regardless of its duration.
