Since the introduction of Security Operations Centers (SOCs) around 15 years ago, their importance has grown significantly, especially over the last five years. This is mainly due to the paramount necessity to prevent major cyber incidents and the resulting adoption of centralized security operations in businesses. Despite their popularity, existing academic work on the topic lacks a generally accepted view and focuses mainly on fragments rather than looking at it holistically. These shortcomings impede further innovation. In this paper, a comprehensive literature survey is conducted to collate different views. The discovered literature is then used to determine the current state-of-the-art of SOCs and derive primary building blocks. Current challenges within a SOC are identified and summarized. A notable shortcoming of academic research is its focus on the human and technological aspects of a SOC while neglecting the connection of these two areas by specific processes (especially by non-technical processes). However, this area is essential for leveraging the full potential of a SOC in the future.

Security Operations Center: A Systematic Study and Open Challenges

As the world keeps advancing, the need for automated interconnected devices has started to gain significance; to cater to the condition, a new concept Internet of Things (IoT) has been introduced that revolves around smart devicesʼ conception. These smart devices using IoT can communicate with each other through a network to attain particular objectives, i.e., automation and intelligent decision making. IoT has enabled the users to divide their household burden with machines as these complex machines look after the environment variables and control their behavior accordingly. As evident, these machines use sensors to collect vital information, which is then the complexity analyzed at a computational node that then smartly controls these devicesʼ operational behaviors. Deep learning-based guessing attack protection algorithms have been enhancing IoT security; however, it still has a critical challenge for the complex industries’ IoT networks. One of the crucial aspects of such systems is the need to have a significant training time for processing a large dataset from the networkʼs previous flow of data. Traditional deep learning approaches include decision trees, logistic regression, and support vector machines. However, it is essential to note that this convenience comes with a price that involves security vulnerabilities as IoT networks are prone to be interfered with by hackers who can access the sensor/communication data and later utilize it for malicious purposes. This paper presents the experimental study of cryptographic algorithms to classify the types of encryption algorithms into the asymmetric and asymmetric encryption algorithm. It presents a deep analysis of AES, DES, 3DES, RSA, and Blowfish based on timing complexity, size, encryption, and decryption performances. It has been assessed in terms of the guessing attack in real-time deep learning complex IoT applications. The assessment has been done using the simulation approach and it has been tested the speed of encryption and decryption of the selected encryption algorithms. For each encryption and decryption, the tests executed the same encryption using the same plaintext for five separate times, and the average time is compared. The key size used for each encryption algorithm is the maximum bytes the cipher can allow. To the comparison, the average time required to compute the algorithm by the three devices is used. For the experimental test, a set of plaintexts is used in the simulation—password-sized text and paragraph-sized text—that achieves target fair results compared to the existing algorithms in real-time deep learning networks for IoT applications.

Traditionally, network and security operation center teams have worked in silos despite commonalities. The network operating center (NOC) team is to provide operationality and availability of information technology (IT) assets, while the security operation center (SOC) team is to ensure IT assets security and protect them from cyber-security attacks. The convergence in IT assets and exponential growth in cyber-security threats in the present digital-online scenario have created many challenges in maintaining network and IT assets effectively and protecting them. It is vital to break these silos and bring them under one integrated unit to effectively counter cyber-security attacks, threats, and vandalism at a reduced operational cost. Despite its necessity, the relevant literature lacks an opinion. It focuses mainly on conceptual segments instead of a holistic view of an integrated NOC and SOC architecture, limiting further innovations in the field. A systematic literature review and analysis is conducted to collate and understand current research ideas in this paper. The mapped relevant literature and our expertise have been then used to propose the implementable state-of-the-art architecture of an integrated NOC and SOC, its definition, the main building blocks and its usefulness for the organizations. Only explicit knowledge of people is considered while neglecting the tacit knowledge in automating and integrating the processes of NOC and SOC, which is the major limitation of the relevant literature. Taping people tacit knowledge is necessary for utilizing the entire caliber of the NOC and SOC integration in the future.

A systematic method for measuring the performance of a cyber security operations centre analyst

The boundless in the digital world is one of the terms used to describe the present state where everything depends mostly on the use of technology. The increased dependency on these technology services has indirectly increased the risk of threats and cyber-attacks. One of the popular solutions to defend against these threats is by implementing the Cyber Security Operation Center (SOC) to monitor, track and handle the cyber incidents. However, there are a number of factors that affect the success of the SOC. Therefore, this paper aims to highlight the importance of the human, process and technology factors towards the establishment of SOC. A comparison of the previous establishment of SOC from the literature is made. The inputs from the literature come from the journal, proceeding, report starting from the year 2011 until 2018. From the result of the comparison, it presents the requirement of human, process, and technology to make sure the SOC work efficiently to defend against the cyber-attack.
