The comparative analysis of the two hybrid composites, obtained by the compocasting process, based on A356 and ZA-27 alloys and reinforced with 10 wt.Â % SiC and 0, 1 and 3 wt.Â % graphite (Gr) is presented. Optimisation of their tribological behaviour was performed by the Taguchi method and the artificial neural network (ANN). Tribological tests were performed on a block-on-disk tribometer, at three sliding speeds, three normal loads and a sliding distance of 600Â m, without lubrication. Results obtained by the ANOVA showed that the hybrid composites based on A356 alloy have the better wear resistance and that the composite reinforced with 10 wt.Â % SiC and 1 wt.Â % Gr has the lowest wear rate. The lowest coefficient of friction was obtained for a composite based on ZA-27 alloy reinforced with 10 wt.Â % SiC, at a normal load of 10 N and sliding speed of 1 m/s.

Study on Friction Properties of In Situ Synthesized (AlB2 + Al2O3)/A356 Composite

In our present work, alumina/BNNTs and alumina/MoS2 coatings were deposited onto stainless steel substrates by solution precursor high velocity oxy-fuel thermal spraying. The phase evolution, microstructure and tribological properties of the two kinds of coatings were studied. Investigation of the phased content showed that Al2O3, BN and MoS2 survived in the coatings after being sprayed with SHVOF technology. Cross-section images of the coatings showed that the interface between the coating and the substrate was well bonded, and there were no obvious particle inclusions and defects at the interface. The top morphology of the coatings exhibited certain degree of particle deformation, which was conducive to the formation of a more compact coating with less porous and better bonding strength with the substrate. Dry sliding tests showed that alumina/BNNTs and alumina/MoS2coating improved the tribological properties of the samples and they were suitable for low load friction conditions (5 and 10 N). A crack evolution model was proposed to analyze the failure of coatings. This work could provide a reference for the application of the two coatings in the field of friction and wear.

 The present work highlights the significant effects of varying wt.% of Sn metal powder in the hypo eutectic Al-7Si/10 wt.% Al2O3 composite. The composites were manufactured through a multi-stage stir casting route and characterized for mechanical and wear behavior using ASTM standards. The results revealed that the increase in Sn content up to 4 wt.% in the matrix enhanced the microhardness, tensile properties, and reduced the porosity. The Al-7Si/10 wt.% Al2O3 composite with 4% Sn particle reinforcement shows the highest tensile strength and hardness of 132 MPa and 90 BHN, respectively. All composites exhibited a ductile mode of failure, as evidenced by the tear ridges and dimples on the tensile fracture surface. By adding of Sn metal powder to the material system, the wear rate and coefficient of friction were reduced. At 1000 m of sliding distance and 1 m/s of sliding velocity, the wear loss of 8 wt% Sn composite was decreased by 88.8% as compared to Al-7Si base alloy at a normal load of 10 N whereas, at 40 N of normal load, the wear loss was decreased by 66.6%. During the wear process, the Sn metal powder surfaced and formed a thin tribo film that mechanically mixed with the surface, resulting in reduced friction. The layer at the interface prevented direct contact between asperities on the mating surface, which reduced wear loss. The composites without Sn metal powder exhibited adhesive wear and delamination as the primary wear mechanisms, while composites with Sn showed predominantly adhesive wear. Regression analysis followed by a desirability function approach was carried out to develop the model and optimize the operating conditions of the experiments.

Mechanical and Tribological Characteristics of hypo eutectic Al-7Si alloy-based composite reinforced with Sn metal powder and Al2O3 using Bottom pouring stir casting Technique

This study compared the hardness of composites reinforced with 10% nano Si 3 N 4 and produced using a novel encapsulation technique to as-cast AA4032. The samples for both groups were produced using the stir-casting method and a new encapsulating approach. For group 1, the combination of nano Si 3 N 4 (10%) and AA4032 was used as a composite, while for group 2, AA4032 as-cast was used. The samples were created following ASTM E92 criteria, and their hardness was assessed using a Vickers hardness machine. In each group, there were 20 samples. G-power of 80% = 0.05 per set and a total sample size of 40 were used to calculate the sample size. The 10% nano Si 3 N 4 filled material was the most challenging material, which was 35% tougher than the as-cast AA4032. According to the t-test statistical analysis, the mean-variance of hardness between group 1 and group 2 differs by p = 0.00 (p < 0.05). Within the constraints of this work, it is clear that the inclusion of 10% nano Si 3 N 4 reinforcement dramatically increases the hardness of the AA4032 composite.
