Iron-phosphate glass fibres based on the CaO-Na2O-Fe2O3-P2O5 system have been processed and characterised via thermal, XRPD, dissolution rates, diameter and biocompatibility studies. The compositions investigated were fixed at 50mol% P2O5, and the CaO content was varied between 30, 35 and 40mol%. The Fe2O3 was added in low amounts from 1-5mol%, substituting it for the Na2O mol%. The number of Tc (crystallisation temperature) peaks detected from the thermal analysis traces only showed correlation with XRPD analysis, for five out of the 15 compositions investigated. It has been suggested that either the crystalline phases had very similar Tc temperatures or that the other phase(s) were present in very small quantities. There was a good match seen with number of Tm (melting temperature) peaks picked up from the DTA traces, with the number of phases identified from XRPD analysis. The main phases identified from XRPD were NaCa(PO3)3, CaP2O6 and NaFeP2O7. Using network connectivity (NC), predictions on Qn species present within the compositions investigated were made. The predicted species (metaphosphates) matched with phases identified from XRPD analysis. A decrease in dissolution rates for the bulk glass and glass fibres was seen with an increase in CaO mol%, along with an increase in Fe2O3 mol%. An increase in fibre dissolution rates was seen with a decrease in diameter size. The biocompatibility studies were conducted using a conditionally immortal muscle precursor cell line derived from the H-2Kb-tsA58 immortomouse. It was found that iron-phosphate glass fibres containing 4-5mol% Fe2O3 was sufficient for cell attachment and differentiation. It was seen that myotubes formed along the axis of the fibres (which was indicative of differentiation). The biocompatibility of these compositions was attributed to the enhanced chemical durability of the glass fibres.

Processing, characterisation and biocompatibility of iron phosphate glass fibres for tissue engineering

The effect of oxide modifiers on multiple properties (structural and spectroscopic) of phosphate glasses with molar composition 60P2O5-(10-x)Ga2O3-30MO-xEu2O3 and 60P2O5-(10-y)Ga2O3-30MO-yEr2O3 (where M = Ca, Sr, Ba; x = 0, 0.5; y = 0, 1) were systematically examined and discussed. The local structure of systems was evidenced by the infrared (IR-ATR) and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The spectroscopic behaviors of the studied glass systems were determined based on analysis of recorded spectra (excitation and emission) as well as luminescence decay curves. Intense red and near-infrared emissions (1.5 μm) were observed for samples doped with Eu3+ and Er3+ ions, respectively. It was found that the value of fluorescence intensity ratio R/O related to 5D0→7F2 (red) and 5D0→7F1 (orange) transition of Eu3+ ions depends on the oxide modifiers MO in the glass host. However, no clear influence of glass modifiers on the luminescence linewidth (FWHM) was observed for phosphate systems doped with Er3+ ions. Moreover, the 5D0 and 4I13/2 luminescence lifetimes of Eu3+ and Er3+ ions increase with the increasing ionic radius of M2+ (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) in the host matrix. The obtained results suggest the applicability of the phosphate glasses with oxide modifiers as potential red and near-infrared photoluminescent materials in photonic devices.

Crystalline/Amorphous Co2P@FePO4 Core/Shell Nanoheterostructures Supported on Porous Carbon Microspheres as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts

Glasses based on the Li2O–Fe2O3–In2O3–Bi2O3–P2O5 system were prepared as potential low-melting sealing glasses. The modifications of the glass structure were characterized by means of XRD and FTIR spectroscopy as a function of Bi2O3/P2O5 substitutions. The bulk density, together with other parameters, was also calculated. The amorphous nature was observed for all glass samples except the highest Bi-content. FTIR and Raman spectrum reveal that the prompt polymerization of the phosphate chains by increasing the Bi2O3 content and forming P–O–Bi bonds and the existence of different structural groups FeO6, FeO4, BiO6, PO4, PO3 and PO. The dilatometry measurements showed an increase in both transition (Tg) and softening (Ts) temperatures with Bi-content. Conversely, coefficients of thermal expansion decreased from 120 × 10−7/°C to 80 × 10−7/°C. The dissolution rate of the prepared glasses was tested, and the results showed significantly improved glass stability. Finally, the obtained glasses have a suitable working temperature, suitable thermal expansion values, and good thermal and chemical stability, making them a prospective candidate for low-temperature sealing materials.

The assessment of impact of incorporation of various amount of Fe2O3 at the expense of MgO and CaO on the glassy phase formation and thermal stability exhibited in P2O5–SiO2–K2O–MgO–CaO–Fe2O3 system was carried out. The characteristic temperatures for iron phosphate–silicate glasses and glass-crystalline materials were designated from associated DSC curves. Selected samples were subjected to the process of induced crystallization, and products combined with particular exothermic effects were identified. Combination of DSC, XRD and SEM–EDS methods enabled to collect invaluable data concerning the course of crystallization of not only iron phosphate–silicate glasses subjected to the process of induced crystallization, but also glass-crystalline materials obtained directly through melt-quenched technique. The amount of particular crystalline products associated with selected devitrificates was determined via Rietveld technique. Results of the conducted study indicated that Fe2O3 addition conduces to the decrease in crystallization temperatures and thermal stability which was reflected in calculated values of ΔT and KW parameters. Concomitantly, glass with 20 mol% iron (III) oxide addition exhibited significantly improved, distinctive thermal stability among the materials in the analyzed series. The connection of crystalline phases with gradual alterations in polymerization degree of glass matrix was also established. The performed study is a contribution to the knowledge of iron phosphate glasses family and associated glass-crystalline materials.

The glass formation and crystallization studies on iron phosphate–silicate glasses

Iron phosphate-silicate glasses from P2O5–SiO2–K2O–MgO–CaO–Fe2O3 system were subjected to the thermal and spectroscopic studies in order to gain information about their structure and thermal behavior in the range of glass transition effect. Research includes results obtained via DSC, MIR and DRIFT spectroscopy. Designated values of glass transition temperature and specific heat change slightly increases with Fe2O3 incorporation. Spectra collected during thermal treatment of glasses containing 2 and 30 mol% Fe2O3 exhibited various changes. Fe2O3 addition affected the glass structure by its reinforcement and led to its preservation during thermal treatment. The connection between density, molar volume, oxygen packing density and the chemical composition’s alteration were also established because of the direct dependence of physical properties and the structure. Obtained results supported thermal and spectroscopic studies. Conducted research is considered as a contribution to the knowledge about the family of iron phosphate glasses, which are known from their interesting properties and widely used applications.
