Solid-state switch-mode rectification converters have reached a matured level for improving power quality in terms of power-factor correction (PFC), reduced total harmonic distortion at input AC mains and precisely regulated DC output in buck, boost, buck-boost and multilevel modes with unidirectional and bidirectional power flow. This paper deals with a comprehensive review of improved power quality converters (IPQCs) configurations, control approaches, design features, selection of components, other related considerations, and their suitability and selection for specific applications. It is targeted to provide a wide spectrum on the status of IPQC technology to researchers, designers and application engineers working on switched-mode AC-DC converters. A classified list of more than 450 research publications on the state of art of IPQC is also given for a quick reference.

A review of single-phase improved power quality AC-DC converters

Three-phase multipulse AC-DC converters (MPC) are developed for improving power quality to reduce harmonics in AC mains and ripples in DC output. This paper deals with the multipulse AC-DC converter configurations, state of art, their performance, power quality aspects, components selection considerations, latest trends, future developments, and potential applications. It is targeted to provide broad perspective on multipulse converter technology to the researchers, engineers, and designers dealing with them. A classified list of more than 250 research publications on the subject is also given for quick reference.

Multipulse AC–DC Converters for Improving Power Quality: A Review

Transformer rectifier units (TRUs) are a reliable way for dc generation in several electric applications. These units are formed by multiple three-phase uncontrolled bridge rectifiers connected according to two main topologies (parallel and series), and fed by a phase-shifting transformer, which can have different configurations. Fault diagnosis of the uncontrolled bridge rectifier diodes is one of the most important concerns on the electronic devices, nonetheless, rectifier units are inherently not protected in front of open-circuit (O/C) faults, which cause malfunction and performance deterioration. In order to solve this drawback, the proposed fault diagnosis method is based on the O/C fault signature observed in the dc-link output voltage of TRUs rectifier. It allows detecting the O/C diodes of parallel and series TRUs with different phase-shifting transformer configurations and for the most usual fault scenarios. Moreover, it also helps the prediction of diodes that could be exposed to failure after the fault, which provides corrective maintenance for the TRU development. The proposed method is illustrated from MATLAB numerical simulations of a 12-pulse TRU, and is validated with experimental tests.

Open-Circuit Fault Diagnosis and Maintenance in Multi-Pulse Parallel and Series TRU Topologies

This paper presents a new mathematical model for tapped interphase reactor (IPR) in a six-phase diode bridge rectifier. On the basis of coupling circuit principle and phase coordinate method, the proposed model, which reduces the mutual inductance coupling completely, describes the IPR by an admittance matrix containing the information about the connection way and electrical quantities. To double-tap IPR as an example, and using the proposed method, the full-decoupling model is set up. Compared with the model built by Kirchhoff's law, the proposed model is easier to realize in simulation software. The proposed method can well be extended to the multitap IPR. Some theoretical analysis, computer simulation, and experiments are included to verify the correctness of the model.

Modeling for a Multitap Interphase Reactor in a Multipulse Diode Bridge Rectifier

A new pulse multiplication technique based on six-pulse thyristor converters is proposed in this paper. With the proposed technique, 12-pulse, 18-pulse, and 24-pulse operations have been obtained both on the input current and on the output voltage. A control strategy over the whole range of phase angle is provided along with sophisticated input current and output voltage analysis. Experimental results from a laboratory prototype verify the proposed theory.

This paper proposes a multi-pulse converter for high voltage and high power applications such as HVDC conversion. The proposed technique, based on the DC current reinjection, further decreases the number of components in the auxiliary circuit to achieve the same pulse number. Moreover a control strategy over the whole range of phase delay angle is obtained along with sophisticated input current and output voltage analysis. With the pulse multiplication strategy the proposed schemes demonstrate 24-pulse, 36-pulse and 48-pulse characteristics both in the input current and in the output voltage. Experimental results from a 3 kVA laboratory prototype verify the proposed concept.

Multi-pulse converters for high voltage and high power applications

This paper proposes a harmonic reduction technique of the parallel-connected twelve-pulse thyristor rectifiers. The proposed system is an improvement over the diode rectifier system with an active interphase reactor [2] In this scheme, a low kVA (0.15 Po (PU) ) active current source injects a triangular current into an interphase reactor of a twelve-pulse thyristor rectifier along the phase delay angle The current injection results in near sinusoidal input current with less than 1% THD Detailed analysis of the proposed scheme along with design equations is illustrated. Simulation results verify the concept.

Harmonic Reduction of Parallel-Connected Thyristor Rectifiers with an Active Interphase Reactor

Uncontrolled diode rectifiers have been widely used at the front end of power electronic equipment as an interface to the electric utility. Due to the nonlinear nature of diodes and DC link capacitors, the input line currents are highly distorted and contain significant harmonics causing a number of harmonic problems in the power system. In this paper, a new 24-pulse diode rectifier system based upon the conventional series-connected 12-pulse rectifier is proposed with the least number of switching devices and low VA rating of the additional passive components. The proposed approach does not employ any active switching devices, and therefore is rugged and simple to implement. Detailed analysis with VA rating calculation of the components is presented and experimental results from a 220 V, 3 kVA rectifier system verify the proposed concept.
