This paper reports the ability of 1,3:2,4‐dibenzylidene‐D‐ sorbitol (DBS), a simple, commercially‐relevant compound, to self‐assemble as a result of intermolecular non‐covalent interactions into supramolecular gels in deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The DESs are based on choline chloride combined with alcohols/ureas – DBS forms gels at a loading of 5% wt/vol. Rheology confirms the gel‐like nature of the materials, electron microscopy indicates underpinning nanofibrillar DBS networks and differential scanning calorimetry shows the deep eutectic solvent nature of the liquid‐like phase is retained. The ionic conductivities of the gels are similar to those of the unmodified DESs proving the deep eutectic nature of the ionic liquid‐like phase. Gelation is tolerant of ionic additives Li+, Mg2+ and Ca2+, with the resulting gels having similar conductivities to electrolyte dissolved in the native DES. The low‐molecular‐weight gelator DBS is a low‐cost additive – forming gels in DESs from readily‐available constituents, with conductivity levels suitable for practical applications. We suggest supramolecular eutectogels have potential uses ranging from energy technology to synthesis and catalysis.

Emerging Ionic Soft Materials Based on Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have aroused great interest because of their potential applicability in displays and smart systems, including windows, rearview mirrors, and helmet visors. In the last decades, different device structures and materials have been proposed to meet the requirements of commercial applications to boost market entry. To this end, employing simple device architectures and achieving a competitive electrolyte are crucial to accomplish easily implementable, high-performance ECDs. The present review outlines devices comprising gel electrolytes as a single electroactive layer (“all-in-one”) ECD architecture, highlighting some advantages and opportunities they offer over other electrochromic systems. In this context, gel electrolytes not only overcome the drawbacks of liquid and solid electrolytes, such as liquid’s low chemical stability and risk of leaking and soil’s slow switching and lack of transparency, but also exhibit further strengths. These include easier processability, suitability for flexible substrates, and improved stabilization of the chemical species involved in redox processes, leading to better cyclability and opening wide possibilities to extend the electrochromic color palette, as discussed herein. Finally, conclusions and outlook are provided.

The invention relates to a solid-state electrochromic device and a preparation method and application thereof. The solid-state electrochromic device comprises two transparent electrodes arranged oppositely and electrochromic gel arranged between the two transparent electrodes, wherein the electrochromic gel contains low-phase eutectic solvent gel electrolyte, an electrochromic material evenly dispersed in the low-phase eutectic solvent gel electrolyte and an electron donor, and the two transparent electrodes are connected through a circuit. The preparation method comprises the steps of preparing a low-phase eutectic solvent, preparing the electrochromic gel and manufacturing the solid-state electrochromic device. The solid-state electrochromic device is used for manufacturing an electrochromic displayer, an electrochromic rearview mirror, electrochromic glass or electrochromic glasses. Compared with the prior art, the solid-state electrochromic device is simple in structure, low in energy consumption, good in stability, long in service life and has a very good application prospect, and the coloring and fading efficiency is reduced by only about 20% after continuous work for 24 hours (more than 1000 cycles).
