The American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) Journal of Clinical Apheresis (JCA) Special Issue Writing Committee is charged with reviewing, updating, and categorizing indications for the evidence-based use of therapeutic apheresis in human disease. Since the 2007 JCA Special Issue (Fourth Edition), the Committee has incorporated systematic review and evidence-based approaches in the grading and categorization of apheresis indications. This Seventh Edition of the JCA Special Issue continues to maintain this methodology and rigor to make recommendations on the use of apheresis in a wide variety of diseases/conditions. The JCA Seventh Edition, like its predecessor, has consistently applied the category and grading system definitions in the fact sheets. The general layout and concept of a fact sheet that was used since the fourth edition has largely been maintained in this edition. Each fact sheet succinctly summarizes the evidence for the use of therapeutic apheresis in a specific disease entity. The Seventh Edition discusses 87 fact sheets (14 new fact sheets since the Sixth Edition) for therapeutic apheresis diseases and medical conditions, with 179 indications, which are separately graded and categorized within the listed fact sheets. Several diseases that are Category IV which have been described in detail in previous editions and do not have significant new evidence since the last publication are summarized in a separate table. The Seventh Edition of the JCA Special Issue serves as a key resource that guides the utilization of therapeutic apheresis in the treatment of human disease. J. Clin. In the Ninth Edition, the JCA Special Issue Writing Committee has incorporated systematic review and evidence‐based approaches in the grading of evidence and categorization of apheresis indications to make recommendations on the use of apheresis in a wide variety of diseases and conditions. This edition has largely maintained the general layout and concept of a fact sheet introduced in the Fourth Edition (2007). Each fact sheet succinctly summarizes the evidence for the use of TA in a specific disease or medical condition. The Ninth Edition of the JCA Special Issue comprises 91 fact sheets and 166 graded and categorized indications. This includes seven new fact sheets, nine new indications on existing fact sheets, and eight changes in the category for existing indications. The Ninth Edition of the JCA Special Issue seeks to continue to serve as a key resource that guides the utilization of TA in the treatment of human disease.

Hybrid welding, using the combination of a laser and an electrical arc, is designed to overcome problems commonly encountered during either laser or arc welding such as cracking, brittle phase formation and porosity. When placed in close contact with each other, the two heat sources interact in such a way as to produce a single high intensity energy source. This synergistic interaction of the two heat sources has been shown to alleviate problems commonly encountered in each individual welding process. Hybrid welding allows increased gap tolerances, as compared to laser welding, while retaining the high weld speed and penetration necessary for the efficient welding of thicker workpieces. Problems and issues in laser-arc hybrid welding

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy is highly effective in the therapy of carcinoma in situ of the bladder, but the mechanism of BCG immunotherapy is not clearly understood. We studied the production of TNF-alpha in spleens and bladders of mice after intravesical BCG or BCG/interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) instillation. Significant change of TNF-alpha mRNA expression of spleens and bladders of C3H/He mice was observed after intravesical BCG instillation, although intravesical IFN-gamma therapy 3 days after BCG instillation to maintain the activated state of monocyte/macrophage lineage cells did not show a significant change of TNF-alpha mRNA, compared with that of BCG therapy alone. Maximal production of TNF-alpha mRNA in spleens of mice was seen after the first or second intravesical BCG instillation, and production of TNF-alpha mRNA in bladders was also increased after intravesical BCG instillation. The increment of TNF-alpha production by BCG stimulation in HL-60, a promyelocytic leukaemic cell line, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro may support the in vivo effect of BCG therapy on the bladder. These data show that local production of TNF-alpha as well as systemic production by intravesical BCG treatment may correlate with one of the mechanisms of BCG immunotherapy of superficial bladder cancer.

Induction of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) mRNA in bladders and spleens of mice after intravesical administration of bacillus Calmette-Guérin

The effects of pretransplantation dialysis modality on graft function are key issues in end-stage renal disease patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate post-transplantation outcomes according to pretransplantation renal replacement therapy modality in deceased-donor kidney transplantation. Among 444 deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients in Severance Hospital between April 1993 and Dec 2014, 275 who maintained a unique dialysis modality (hemodialysis [HD; n = 178] or peritoneal dialysis [PD; n = 97]) until transplantation were enrolled. There were no significant differences in sex, age, human leukocyte antigen mismatch, cold ischemic time, or duration of dialysis between groups. There was also no difference in 5-year graft survival between HD and PD groups (87.7% vs. 82.3%, respectively; P = .148). On multivariate Cox regression for risk factors affecting graft survival, renal replacement therapy modality was not found to be a risk factor. However, the rate of delayed graft function was higher in the HD group than in the PD group (32.0% vs. 19.6%, respectively; P = .028). In addition, graft function at 1 week after transplantation in the PD group was superior to that in the HD group. The pretransplantation dialysis modality was found to affect both delayed graft function and early graft function, although not graft survival.

Outcomes of Kidney Recipients According to Mode of Pretransplantation Renal Replacement Therapy

This study aims to identify the optimal welding conditions for laser hybrid welding on a 5052-H32 aluminium alloy. Non-linear transient thermal analysis is adopted to simulate the thermo-physical phenomena in the welding process. Taguchi's parameter design method is applied to establish the optimal welding parameters that minimize residual stress and strain. The results obtained via design of experiments (DOE) and Taguchi's parameter design using the welding simulations are compared with the experimental results. Using DOE data, approximation models such as the polynomial-based response surface method and the radial basis function neural network are constructed. Using such approximation models, the relationship between welding conditions and thermo-mechanical responses can easily be estimated according to the parameter variations.

Fabrication of Magnetic Nanowires by Using Laser Interference Lithography and Magnetic Analysis

Fe nanowires 300 nm in width are fabricated from the epitaxial Fe film on Cu(001)/Si(001) by using laser interference lithography and chemical wet etching. The wire axis is parallel to the magnetic hard direction of the film. Scanning electron microscope and electron diffraction spectroscope spot profile analysis indicate that the isolated wires are successively fabricated. Although the Fe film shows intrinsic fourfold symmetry due to its crystallinity, the magnetic properties of the nanowires are strongly dominated by the uniaxial shape anisotropy.
