The production and utilization of polymers have been widely implemented into diverse applications that benefit modern human society, but one of the most valuable properties of polymers, durability, has posed a long-standing environmental challenge from its inception since plastic waste can lead to significant contamination and remains in landfills and oceans for at least hundreds of years. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) derived from renewable resources provides a sustainable alternative to traditional polymers due to its advantages of comparable mechanical properties with common plastics and biodegradability. However, the poor thermal and hydrolytic stability of PLA-based materials limit their potential for durable applications. Stereocomplex crystallization of enantiomeric poly (l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly (d-lactide) (PDLA) provides a robust approach to significantly enhance material properties such as stability and biocompatibility through strong intermolecular interactions between L-lactyl and D-lactyl units, which has been the key strategy to further PLA applications. This review focuses on discussing recent progress in the development of processing strategies for enhancing the formation of stereocomplexes within PLA materials, including thermal processing, additive manufacturing, and solution casting. The mechanism for enhancing SC formation and resulting material property improvement enabled by each method are also discussed. Finally, we also provide the perspectives on current challenges and opportunities for improving the understanding of processing-structure-property relationship in PLA materials that could be beneficial to their wide practical applications for a sustainable society.

Recent Progress in Enhancing Poly(Lactic Acid) Stereocomplex Formation for Material Property Improvement

Nowadays, sensor devices are developing fast. It is therefore critical, at a time when the availability and recyclability of materials are, along with acceptability from the consumers, among the most important criteria used by industrials before pushing a device to market, to review the most recent advances related to functional electronic materials, substrates or packaging materials with natural origins and/or presenting good recyclability. This review proposes, in the first section, passive materials used as substrates, supporting matrixes or packaging, whether organic or inorganic, then active materials such as conductors or semiconductors. The last section is dedicated to the review of pertinent sensors and devices integrated in sensors, along with their fabrication methods.

Sensors Made of Natural Renewable Materials: Efficiency, Recyclability or Biodegradability-The Green Electronics.

In this work, bionanocomposites based on two different types of biopolymers belonging to the MaterBi® family and containing two kinds of modified nanoclays were compounded in a twin-screw extruder and then subjected to a film blowing process, aiming at obtaining sustainable films potentially suitable for packaging applications. The preliminary characterization of the extruded bionanocomposites allowed establishing some correlations between the obtained morphology and the material rheological and mechanical behavior. More specifically, the morphological analysis showed that, regardless of the type of biopolymeric matrix, a homogeneous nanofiller dispersion was achieved; furthermore, the established biopolymer/nanofiller interactions caused a restrain of the dynamics of the biopolymer chains, thus inducing a significant modification of the material rheological response, which involves the appearance of an apparent yield stress and the amplification of the elastic feature of the viscoelastic behavior. Besides, the rheological characterization under non-isothermal elongational flow revealed a marginal effect of the embedded nanofillers on the biopolymers behavior, thus indicating their suitability for film blowing processing. Additionally, the processing behavior of the bionanocomposites was evaluated and compared to that of similar systems based on a low-density polyethylene matrix: this way, it was possible to identify the most suitable materials for film blowing operations. Finally, the assessment of the mechanical properties of the produced blown films documented the potential exploitation of the selected materials for packaging applications, also at an industrial level.

Bionanocomposite blown films: Insights on the rheological and mechanical behavior

The use of biodegradable and biocompatible materials for electronic applications is a research topic of great interest, offering the possibility to develop bio-electronic devices and reduce e-wastes. In this work, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films were prepared to be employed as substrates in flexible optoelectronic devices and their functionality was tested in indium tin oxide-free organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The PLA substrates were fabricated by extrusion and characterized in terms of morphological, optical and wettability properties. The films showed optical transmittance of about 90% in the visible region and surface roughness of about 12 nm, optical and morphological parameters suitable for OLED applications. Different structures were fabricated on top of the PLA substrates by hybrid technology through solution-based and thermal evaporation deposition methods. Good electro-optical properties were detected in iridium complexes-based devices, with current efficiencies of about 14 and 1 cd/A in structures with tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) (Ir[ppy]3) and bis[2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-C2,N](picolinato)iridium (FIrPic) as emitting layer, respectively. The biocompatibility assay showed that the encapsulated devices do not release toxic substances and their biocompatibility can be improved by selecting different encapsulating glues. The results of this study show the potentiality of PLA as substrate for the fabrication of biocompatible and biodegradable optoelectronic devices opening new routes for the development of advanced bio-electronic systems.

Fabrication and biocompatibility analysis of flexible organic light emitting diodes on poly(lactic acid) substrates: toward the development of greener bio‐electronic devices

Biodegradable Polymer Nanocomposites for Electronics

As a synthetic renewable and biodegradable material, the application of polylactide (PLA) in the green flexible electronics has attracted intensive attention due to the increasingly serious issue of electronic waste. Unfortunately, the development of PLA-based optoelectronic devices is greatly hindered by the poor heat resistance and mechanical property of PLA. To overcome these limitations, herein, we report a facile and promising route to fabricate silver nanowires/PLA (AgNW/PLA) film with largely improved properties by utilizing the stereocomplex (SC) crystallization between poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA). Through embedding the AgNW networks into the PLLA:PDLA blend matrix via a transfer method, the AgNW/PLLA:PDLA film with both high transparency and excellent conductivity was obtained. Compared with the AgNW/PLLA film, the formation of SC crystallites in the composites matrix could significantly enhance not only heat resistance but also mechanical strength of the AgNW/PLLA:PDLA film. Exceptionally, the AgNW/PLLA:PDLA film exhibited superior flexibility and could maintain excellent electrical conductivity stability even under the condition of 10,000 repeated bending cycles and 100 tape test cycles. In addition, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the AgNW/PLLA:PDLA films as electrodes were successfully fabricated in this work for the first time and they exhibited highly flexible, luminous, as well as hydrolytic degradation properties. This work could provide a low-cost and environment-friendly avenue towards fabricating high-performanced PLA-based biodegradable electronics.

Biodegradable, Flexible, and Transparent Conducting Silver Nanowires/Polylactide Film with High Performance for Optoelectronic Devices.

Four indomethacin-naphthalimide binaries with different proton receptors at 4-position of naphthalimide were designed and synthesized. N,N-Dimethylethylenediamine and N-methyl piperazine were served as proton receptors as well as solubility regulators. Indomethacin, an inhibitor for cyclooxygenase-2 overexpressed on cancer cells, was connected at the imine N through different spacers. The attachment of indomethacin significantly quenched the fluorescence of all compounds with obvious red-shift in the absorption maxima due to the strong photo-induced electron transfer process of the folded-state. Human serum albumin (HSA) triggered about 15-fold fluorescence enhancements of DMN-IMC-5 with 30 nm blue-shift. However, it caused much smaller fluorescence increments of other compounds, suggesting that indomethacin, the linker and proton receptor play critical roles in HSA identification. Fluorescence bioimaging results show that indomethacin enables the naphthalimide-based compounds to fluorescent imaging living cells. Molecular docking reveals that the introduction of indomethacin improved the binding affinity of the dyes to HSA.
