The emergence of mobile edge computing (MEC) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is of great significance for the prospective development of Internet of Things (IoT). The additional computation capability and extensive network coverage provide energy-limited smart mobile devices (SMDs) with more opportunities to experience diverse intelligent applications. In this paper, a computation efficiency maximization problem is formulated in a multi-UAV assisted MEC system, where both computation bits and energy consumption are considered. Based on the partial computation offloading mode, user association, allocation of central processing unit (CPU) cycle frequency, power and spectrum resources, as well as trajectory scheduling of UAVs are jointly optimized. Due to the non-convexity of the problem and the coupling among variables, we propose an iterative optimization algorithm with double-loop structure to find the optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can obtain higher computation efficiency than baseline schemes while guaranteeing the quality of computation service.

Computation-Efficient Offloading and Trajectory Scheduling for Multi-UAV Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

Recent advances in the areas of Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and machine learning have contributed to the rise of a growing number of complex applications. These applications will be data-intensive, delay-sensitive, and real-time as smart devices prevail more in our daily life. Ensuring quality of service (QoS) for delay-sensitive applications is a must, and fog computing is seen as one of the primary enablers for satisfying such tight QoS requirements, as it puts compute, storage, and networking resources closer to the user. In this paper, we first introduce FOGPLAN, a framework for QoS-aware dynamic fog service provisioning (QDFSP). QDFSP concerns the dynamic deployment of application services on fog nodes, or the release of application services that have previously been deployed on fog nodes, in order to meet low latency and QoS requirements of applications while minimizing cost. FOGPLAN framework is practical and operates with no assumptions and minimal information about IoT nodes. Next, we present a possible formulation (as an optimization problem) and two efficient greedy algorithms for addressing the QDFSP at one instance of time. Finally, the FOGPLAN framework is evaluated using a simulation based on real-world traffic traces.

FOGPLAN: A Lightweight QoS-Aware Dynamic Fog Service Provisioning Framework

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly important in assisting 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) mobile networks. Indeed, UAVs have all the potentials to both satisfy the ever-increasing mobile data demands of such mobile networks and provide ubiquitous connectivity to different kinds of wireless devices. However, the UAV assistance paradigm faces a set of crucial issues and challenges. For example, the network management of current UAV-assisted systems is time consuming, complicated, and carried out manually, thus causing a multitude of interoperability issues. To efficiently address all these issues, Software-Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are two promising technologies to efficiently manage and improve the UAV assistance for the next generation of mobile networks. In the literature, no clear guidelines are describing the different use cases of SDN and NFV in the context of UAV assistance to terrestrial networks, including mobile networks. Motivated by this fact, in this survey, we guide the reader through a comprehensive discussion of the main characteristics of SDN and NFV technologies. Moreover, we provide a thorough analysis of the different classifications, use cases, and challenges related to UAV-assisted systems. We then discuss SDN/NFV-enabled UAV-assisted systems, along with several case studies and issues, such as the involvement of UAVs in cellular communications, monitoring, and routing, to name a few. We furthermore present a set of open research challenges, high-level insights, and future research directions related to UAV-assisted systems.

Softwarization of UAV Networks: A Survey of Applications and Future Trends

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have enormous potential in enabling new applications in various areas, ranging from military, security, medicine, and surveillance to traffic-monitoring applications. Lately, there has been heavy investment in the development of UAVs and multi-UAVs systems that can collaborate and complete missions more efficiently and economically. Emerging technologies such as 4G/5G networks have significant potential on UAVs equipped with cameras, sensors, and GPS receivers in delivering Internet of Things (IoT) services from great heights, creating an airborne domain of the IoT. However, there are many issues to be resolved before the effective use of UAVs can be made, including security, privacy, and management. As such, in this paper we review new UAV application areas enabled by the IoT and 5G technologies, analyze the sensor requirements, and overview solutions for fleet management over aerial-networking, privacy, and security challenges. Finally, we propose a framework that supports and enables these technologies on UAVs. The introduced framework provisions a holistic IoT architecture that enables the protection of UAVs as "flying" things in a collaborative networked environment.

UAV IoT Framework Views and Challenges: Towards Protecting Drones as "Things".

Mobile edge computing (MEC) enhanced satellite based internet of things (SAT-IoT) is an important complement for terrestrial networks based IoT, especially for the remote and depopulated areas. For MEC enhanced SAT-IoT networks with multiple satellites and multiple satellite gateways, the coupled user association, offloading decision, computing and communication resource allocation should be jointly optimized to minimize the latency and energy cost. In this paper, the latency and energy optimization for MEC enhanced SAT-IoT networks are formulated as a dynamic mixed-integer programming problem, which is hard to obtain the optimal solutions. To tackle this problem, we decompose the complex problem into two sub-problems. The first one is computing and communication resource allocation with fixed user association and offloading decision, and the second one is joint user association and offloading with optimal resource allocation. For the sub-problem of resource allocation, the optimal solution is proven to be obtained based on Lagrange multiplier method. And then, the second sub-problem is further formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP), and a joint user association and offloading decision with optimal resource allocation (JUAOD-ORA) is proposed based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Simulation results show that the proposed approach can achieve better long-term reward in terms of latency and energy cost.

Latency and Energy Optimization for MEC Enhanced SAT-IoT Networks

Mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables delay-sensitive computing tasks to be executed at network edges, has been proposed to accommodate the explosive growth of the Internet of Things. However, the growing demands for massive connectivity, ultra-low latency, and high reliability in various emerging resource-hungry and computation-intensive applications pose new challenges in network access capacity. This motivates us to conceive a new MEC framework from an air-ground integration perspective. First, we present a review of the state-of-the-art literature. Then the architecture and technological benefits of the proposed framework are elaborated. Next, four typical use cases are introduced, and a case study is conducted to demonstrate the significant performance improvements in computation capability and communication connectivity based on real-world road topology. Finally, we present challenges and research directions, and conclude this article.
