A mixed finite element for hydro-dynamic analysis in saturated porous media in the frame of the Biot theory is proposed. Displacements, effective stresses, strains for the solid phase and pressure, pressure gradients, and Darcy velocities for the fluid phase are interpolated as independent variables. The weak form of the governing equations of coupled hydro-dynamic problems in saturated porous media within the element are given on the basis of the Hu–Washizu three-field variational principle. In light of the stabilized one point quadrature super-convergent element developed in solid continuum, the interpolation approximation modes for the primary unknowns and their spatial derivatives of the solid and the fluid phases within the element are assumed independently. The proposed mixed finite element formulation is derived. The non-linear version of the element formulation is further derived with particular consideration of pressure-dependent non-associated plasticity. The return mapping algorithm for the integration of the rate constitutive equation, the consistent elastoplastic tangent modulus matrix and the element tangent stiffness matrix are developed. For geometrical non-linearity, the co-rotational formulation approach is used. Numerical results demonstrate the capability and the performance of the proposed element in modelling progressive failure characterized by strain localization due to strain softening in poroelastoplastic media subjected to dynamic loading at large strain. Mixed finite element method for saturated poroelastoplastic media at large strains

The finite element models of Cosserat continuum in two- and three-dimensions are presented. The size effects of a cantilever beam and a micro-rod, the well-posedness, the mesh-independent solutions of the boundary value problems with non-associated elastoplastic and strain softening constitutive behavior, and the progressive failure of the two- and three-dimensional vertical excavations are studied. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed Cosserat continuum models are capable of reflecting the size effects of micro-structures, preserving the well-posedness of the boundary value problem characterized by the strain localization, ensuring mesh-independent solutions, and simulating the entire progressive failure process occurring in engineering structures.

Application of the Cosserat continua to numerical studies on the properties of the materials

This paper discusses some theoretical aspects of strain localization analysis in multiphase porous media, particularly when regularized constitutive models such as the gradient-dependent and rate-dependent models are used. Stability and hyperbolicity of the governing equations are studied and the relations between permeability and the wave number where a real wave speed exists are investigated numerically. Particular attention is focused on the two cases of wave number K = 0 and K → ∞ of the perturbation waves. The interaction between the different internal length scale parameters during dynamic strain localization in multiphase porous materials is also studied. It is pointed out that the consideration of fluid interaction is necessary for the prediction of the internal length in a multiphase porous medium when regularization through a constitutive model is introduced in the numerical model to overcome mesh dependence in a finite element solution.

Some Theoretical Aspects of Strain Localization Analysis of Multiphase Porous Media with Regularized Constitutive Models

In the present work, stationary discontinuities and fluttery instabilities of wave propagation in saturated poro-elastoplastic media are analysed in the frame of Biot theory. The generalized Biot formulations are particularly employed for simulating non-linear coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of the media. Inertial coupling effect between the solid and the fluid phases of the media is also taken into account. The non-associated Drucker–Prager criterion to describe non-linear constitutive behaviour of pressure dependent elasto-plasticity for the solid skeleton of the media is particularly considered. With omission of compressibility of solid grains and the pore fluid, the critical conditions of stationary discontinuities and flutter instabilities occurring in wave propagation are given in explicit forms. It is shown that when the stationary discontinuity is triggered at the surface of discontinuity there still may exist real wave speeds. The wave speeds across the stationary discontinuity surface entirely cease to be real only in non-associated plasticity, certain ranges of value of Poisson's ratio and when compression stress normal to the surface of discontinuity dominates the stress state at the surface. It is also indicated that the fluttery instabilities, under which some wave speeds cease to be real even in strain hardening stage, may occur prior to stationary discontinuities only for non-associated plasticity under certain conditions. These conditions are: (1) both the porosity and the Poisson's ratio possess relatively low values and (2) the deviatoric part of the effective stress normal to the surface of discontinuity is compressive. A region in the porosity–Poisson's ratio plot, in which fluttery instabilities are possible to occur, is given. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
