Piezoelectric biomaterials have attracted considerable attention in dental medicine due to their unique ability to convert mechanical force into electricity and catalyze reactions. These materials demonstrate biocompatibility, high bioactivity, and stability, making them suitable for applications such as tissue regeneration, caries prevention, and periodontal disease treatment. Despite their significant potential, the clinical application of these materials in treating oral diseases remains limited, facing numerous challenges in clinical translation. Therefore, further research and data are crucial to advance their application in dentistry. The review emphasizes the transformative impact of multifunctional piezoelectric biomaterials on enhancing dental therapies and outlines future directions for their integration into oral healthcare practices.

Applications of Piezoelectric Biomaterials in Dental Treatments: A Review of Recent Advancements and Future Prospects

This study researches the viscous and hyperelastic mechanical behaviors of hydrogel-based nanocomposite materials, including: (i) a composite of human methacryloyl platelet lysate (hPLMA), human platelet lysates (hPL), and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA); (ii) bovine serum albumin methacryloyl (BSAMA); and (iii) hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA). These materials stand out for their enhanced bioactivity and mechanical strength compared to traditional hydrogels. Their potential applications in various scaffold architectures and the biomechanical restoration of the mandibular joint are investigated. Mechanical compression and relaxation tests are performed on the hydrogel-based samples, with varying nHA content (0%, 1%, and 5%) in the hPL/hPLMA composite, to characterize their visco-hyperelastic behavior. Mechanical parameters are optimized using a micro-genetic algorithm. Results show that increasing nHA content raises compressive stress and intensifies the viscoelastic response. Besides, higher strut density and staggered orthogonal patterns produce more uniform stress distribution despite a less stable viscous response. In in silico simulations of the human mandible, a multimaterial scaffold was created, featuring a hydrogel core with ceramic-based scaffold ends (hydroxyapatite-based cement enriched with hPL). The ceramic phase provided effective mechanical protection for the hydrogel. Besides, substituting the hPL/hPLMA core with HAMA reduced the stress values in the hydrogel phase, while using BSAMA led to increased stress. This study introduces a novel framework integrating experimental data, mechanical optimization, and numerical simulations to elucidate the viscoelastic behavior of hydrogel-based nanocomposite inks and multimaterial scaffolds. This research advances the development of next-generation biomaterials with improved durability and functionality, promoting regenerative medicine and personalized tissue engineering. 

Evaluating visco-hyperelastic mechanical responses of hydrogel-based scaffolds and their potential for biomechanical restoration of the human mandibular joint

Distalization of the maxillary molars is among the most commonly employed nonextraction treatment strategies for angle Class II malocclusion. This approach is primarily recommended for subjects with dentoalveolar maxillary protrusion or minor skeletal abnormalities. A case of a 17-year-old Hispanic male patient with Class II skeletal base with Class II end on canines and molars, upper anterior crowding, severe overjet, and moderate overbite is hereby reported. He refused extraction; therefore, he was offered full single upper arch distalization using subzygomatic temporary anchorage devices (TADs). After 11 months of retraction, the TADs were removed and it was observed that the overjet and overbite were now within normal values and midline shift was also corrected. Satisfactory leveling and alignment, alleviation of crowding, and Class I molar and canine relationship were achieved. The aim of this case report was to describe full single arch distalization using subzygomatic TADs in a patient with Class II skeletal, molar, and canine relationships.

Full single arch distalization in Class II malocclusion using subzygomatic temporary anchorage devices: A case report

Cell-based tissue engineering often requires the use of scaffolds to provide a 3-dimensional (3D) framework for cell proliferation and tissue formation. Polycaprolactone (PCL), a type of polymer, has good printability, favorable surface modifiability, adaptability, and biodegradability. However, its large-scale applicability is hindered by its hydrophobic nature, which affects biological properties. Composite materials can be created by adding bioactive materials to the polymer to improve the properties of PCL scaffolds (PSs). Osteolectin is an odontogenic factor that promotes the maintenance of the adult skeleton by promoting the differentiation of LepR+ cells into osteoblasts. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether 3D-printed PCL/osteolectin scaffolds supply a suitable microenvironment for the odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). The hDPCs were cultured on 3D-printed PSs with or without pores. Cell attachment and cell proliferation were evaluated using EZ-Cytox. The odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs was evaluated by alizarin red S staining and alkaline phosphatase assays. Western blotting was used to evaluate the expression of the proteins DSPP and DMP-Results: The attachment of hDPCs to PSs with pores was significantly higher than to PSs without pores. The odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs was induced more in PCL/osteolectin scaffolds than in PSs, but there was no statistically significant difference. 3D-printed PSs with pores are suitable for the growth of hDPCs, and the PCL/osteolectin scaffolds can provide a more favorable microenvironment for the odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs. .

Effect of 3D-printed polycaprolactone/osteolectin scaffolds on the odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp cells.

ABSTRACT Objectives To identify whether intramaxillary miniscrew anchorage could achieve a better maxillary arch distalization effect in clear aligner treatment compared to Class II elastics. Materials and Methods Thirty adult patients with Class II dentition who were treated with whole maxillary arch distalization using clear aligners were collected. Either intramaxillary miniscrew anchorage (miniscrew group, n = 17) or intermaxillary Class II elastics (Class II elastic group, n = 13) were used to support maxillary arch distalization. Three-dimensional predicted and achieved displacements, and angular changes of maxillary posterior teeth and anterior teeth, were measured and compared. Results The achieved distalization efficiency was 36.2%–43.9% in the posterior teeth and the retraction efficiency was 36.9%–49.4% in the anterior teeth. No statistically significant differences were found in maxillary arch distalization efficiency between the groups. The miniscrew group achieved less incisor extrusion and posterior tooth distal tipping than the Class II elastic group. Both groups achieved comparable arch expansion, posterior tooth buccal inclination, and anterior tooth lingual inclination. Conclusions Intramaxillary miniscrew anchorage and intermaxillary Class II elastics achieved comparable efficiency in maxillary arch distalization. However, the miniscrew anchorage showed better vertical control in anterior teeth and mesiodistal tipping control in posterior teeth.

Impact of molar teeth distalization by clear aligners on temporomandibular joint: a three-dimensional study

Compared to fixed orthodontic appliances with brackets, thermoplastic invisible orthodontic aligners offer several advantages, such as high aesthetic performance, good comfort, and convenient oral health maintenance, and are widely used in orthodontic fields. However, prolonged use of thermoplastic invisible aligners may lead to demineralization and even caries in most patients’ teeth, as they enclose the tooth surface for an extended period. To address this issue, we have created PETG composites that contain piezoelectric barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO3NPs) to obtain antibacterial properties. First, we prepared piezoelectric composites by incorporating varying amounts of BaTiO3NPs into PETG matrix material. The composites were then characterized using techniques such as SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed the successful synthesis of the composites. We cultivated biofilms of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on the surface of the nanocomposites under both polarized and unpolarized conditions. We then activated piezoelectric charges by subjecting the nanocomposites to 10 Hz cyclic mechanical vibration. The interactions between the biofilms and materials were evaluated by measuring the biofilm biomass. The addition of piezoelectric nanoparticles had a noticeable antibacterial effect on both the unpolarized and polarized conditions. Under polarized conditions, nanocomposites demonstrated a greater antibacterial effect than under unpolarized conditions. Additionally, as the concentration of BaTiO3NPs increased, the antibacterial rate also increased, with the surface antibacterial rate reaching 67.39% (30 wt% BaTiO3NPs). These findings have the potential for application in wearable, invisible appliances to improve clinical services and reduce the need for cleaning methods.

Preparation of Nanocomposites for Antibacterial Orthodontic Invisible Appliance Based on Piezoelectric Catalysis

Objective To study the effect of the physiological anchorage control concept on anchorage molars in lingual and labial orthodontic techniques. Methods Three-dimensional finite element models, including the right maxillary first molar, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and buccal tube, were established. The models were divided into the McLaughlin–Bennett–Trevisi (MBT™) straight-wire model with 0-degree maxillary first molar axial inclination and the physiologic anchorage Speewire system (PASS) model with −7-degree maxillary first molar axial inclination. Simulated sliding retraction forces (1 N, 1.5 N, and 2 N) were loaded on the buccal side and lingual side, and retraction forces (0.5 N, 0.75 N, and 1 N) were loaded on the buccal and lingual sides simultaneously. The displacements, principal stresses, and von Mises stresses of the periodontal ligament under different conditions were derived. Results The anchorage molars showed different degrees of rotation, tipping, intrusion, and extrusion. As the force increased, these displacement trends also increased. The mesial displacement of the buccal + lingual force loading was less than that of the other two groups. Under the same force load method, the mesial displacement of the PASS group was less than that of the MBT group. Tilt movement increases the tensile stress of the distal cervical margin and root mesial apical third and the compressive stress of the mesial cervical margin and root distal apical third. The maximum stress of the periodontal ligament was less than that of the other two groups when the lingual force was loaded. Conclusion The physiological anchorage control concept in lingual orthodontics provides better sagittal anchorage control than in labial orthodontics, but there is no significant difference numerically. Attention should be given to the control of torsion, torque, and arch width. Tilt movement increases the PDL stress of the cervical margin and root apical third. The sliding retraction force should be loaded lingually to maintain the force value of 1∼1.5 N.

3D Finite Element Study of the Physiological Anchorage Control Concept on Anchorage Molars in Lingual Orthodontics

The primary goal of bone tissue engineering is to fabricate scaffolds that can provide a microenvironment similar to that of natural bone. Therefore, various scaffolds have been designed to replicate the bone structure. Although most tissues exhibit complicated structures, their basic structural unit includes stiff platelets arranged in a staggered micro-array. Therefore, many researchers have designed scaffolds with staggered patterns. However, relatively few studies have comprehensively analyzed this type of scaffold. In this review, we have analyzed scientific research pertaining to staggered scaffold designs and summarized their effects on the physical and biological properties of scaffolds. Compression tests or finite element analysis are typically used to evaluate the mechanical properties of scaffolds, and most studies have performed experiments in cell cultures. Staggered scaffolds improve mechanical strength and are beneficial for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation in comparison with conventional designs. However, very few have been studied in vivo experiments. Additionally, studies on the effect of staggered structures on angiogenesis or bone regeneration in vivo, particularly in large animals, are required. Currently, with the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies, highly optimized models can be developed, resulting in better discoveries. In the future, AI can be used to deepen our understanding on the staggered structure, promoting its use in clinical applications.
