This paper is concerned with the interfacial thermal resistance for polymer composites reinforced by various covalently functionalised graphene. By using molecular dynamics simulations, the obtained results show that the covalent functionalisation in graphene plays a significant role in reducing the graphene-paraffin interfacial thermal resistance. This reduction is dependent on the coverage and type of functional groups. Among the various functional groups, butyl is found to be the most effective in reducing the interfacial thermal resistance, followed by methyl, phenyl and formyl. The other functional groups under consideration such as carboxyl, hydroxyl and amines are found to produce negligible reduction in the interfacial thermal resistance. For multilayer graphene with a layer number up to four, the interfacial thermal resistance is insensitive to the layer number. The effects of the different functional groups and the layer number on the interfacial thermal resistance are also elaborated using the vibrational density of states of the graphene and the paraffin matrix. The present findings provide useful guidelines in the application of functionalised graphene for practical thermal management.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are considered an ideal substitute for low-efficiency traditional light sources with broad applications in all scientific disciplines. For the past recent years, several developments and innovations have been reported that strengthen the reliability and thermal efficiency of speeding up the LED packaging process. This paper reviews and summarizes various changes and improvements made to die attachment, wire bonding, phosphor coating, encapsulation processes, and thermal management. It also covers the reasons for choosing the materials at every stage of LED packaging. Moreover, the review reveals a broad scope for future research, particularly on thermal management by nanoparticles and improved light intensity by different synthesized phosphors.

A review on advanced carbon-based thermal interface materials for electronic devices

Electronic textiles or e-textiles have become a hot topic considering the future era of wearable electronics that are expected to replace currently available non-flexible devices. Among various methods, coating carbon-based conductive fillers on the flexible fibrous surface seems to be a promising method for e-textile and many other applications. Graphene is the top candidate among other carbon forms owing to its exceptional properties and nontoxicity. The functional groups present on the fibers surface has a significant impact on the adhesion and bonding of graphene sheets, which in turn have a profound effect on forming conductive networks that lead to improved performance of the end product. In this article, graphene oxide (GO) is coated on unmodified and chemically surface modified with positively (amine) and negatively surface (alkali) charged polyester non-woven fabrics. The facile dip-coating technique was used to coat the fabrics, surface bonding, morphology, wettability, and thermal properties of the modified surfaces were thoroughly investigated. The study revealed that modification of the fibre surface leads to increased coating uptake, improved thermal properties and uniform coating coverage. The polyester modified with sodium hydroxide exhibited the best result with an improvement of 30 % for uptake and 15 % for thermal conductivity as compared with the untreated polyester demonstrating the importance of functional groups on the surface of the fibers.

Effect of natural surfactant on the performance of reduced graphene oxide conductive ink

Synthesis of graphene by reducing graphene oxide is the most propitious route for bulk graphene production. Reduction using eco-friendly techniques is more feasible to alleviate toxic chemicals use. Hence, determining the reduction potency of natural substances is vital for further development in the rGO synthesis process. In this work, an experimental investigation was carried out to determine the reduction efficiencies of various natural and thermal reduction techniques. The results were compared with GO reduced with synthetic routes. To ensure accurate determination of reduction potential, constant reaction parameters and the same GO batch synthesized were used. Thorough sample characterization was carried out using FTIR, XPS, FESEM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD and sheet resistance measurements. Results showed that among natural substances, tea powder showed better reduction efficiencies with 13 folds increase in electrical conductivity, whereas synthetic routes showed more than 29 folds increase in the electrical conductivity values as compared to unreduced GO samples. The C/O ratio quantified from XPS analysis was found to be 2.83, 2.98, 3.88 and 6.34 for reduction carried out using lemon extract, coffee, tea powder and direct thermal treatment, respectively. Based on the results, an eco-friendly reduction route using natural substances has the potential for efficient reduction; however, it needs further optimization.
