: Uniform growth of pristine two dimensional (2D) materials over large areas at lower temperatures without sacrifice of their unique physical properties is a critical pre-requisite for seamless integration of next-generation van der Waals heterostructures into functional devices. This Letter describes a vapor phase growth technique for precisely controlled synthesis of continuous, uniform molecular layers of MoS2 on silicon dioxide and highly oriented pyrolitic graphite substrates of over several square centimeters at 350 deg C. Synthesis of few-layer MoS2 in this ultra-high vacuum physical vapor deposition process yields materials with key optical and electronic properties identical to exfoliated layers. The films are composed of nano-scale domains with strong chemical binding between domain boundaries, allowing lift-off from the substrate and electronic transport measurements from contacts with separation on the order of centimeters.

The production of hydrogen via the water splitting process is one of the most promising technologies for future clean energy requirements, and one of the best related challenges is the choice of the most highly efficient and cost effective electrocatalyst. Conventional electrocatalysts based on precious metals are rare and very-expensive for large-scale production of hydrogen, demanding the exploration for low-cost earth abundant alternatives. In this context, extensive works from both theoretical and experimental investigations have shown that two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have gained considerable attention as highly effective electrocatalytic materials for electrical-driven hydrogen production because of their unique layered structure and exciting electrical properties. This review highlights recent advancements on 2D layered materials, including graphene, transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), MXene, and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production. In addition, some fundamental aspects of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process and a wide ranging overview on several strategies to design and synthesize 2D layered material as HER electrocatalysts for commercial applications are introduced. Finally, the conclusion and futuristic prospects and challenges of the advancement of 2D layered materials as non-precious HER electrocatalysts are briefly discussed.

2D-Layered Non-Precious Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: Fundamentals to Applications

Increasing environmental pollution and shortage of conventional fossil fuels have made it urgent to develop renewable and clean energy sources. Electrocatalytic water splitting, with its abundant raw materials, simple process, and zero carbon emission, is considered one of the most promising processes for producing carbon-neutral hydrogen which has excellent energy conversion efficiency and high gravimetric energy density. Among them, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are critical to decreasing the intrinsic reaction energy barrier and boosting the hydrogen evolution efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and design low-cost, highly active, and stable OER and HER electrocatalysts to lower the overpotential and drive the electrocatalytic reactions. Transition metal sulfides, especially iron-based sulfides, have attracted extensive exploration by researchers as a result of its high abundance in the Earth's crust and near-metallic conductivity. Consequently, in this review, we systematically and comprehensively summarize the progress in the application of iron-based sulfides and their composites as OER and HER electrocatalysts in electrocatalysis. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of the special relationships among their composition, structure, and electrocatalytic performance are presented. Finally, this review points out the challenges and future prospects of iron-based sulfides in practical applications for designing and fabricating more promising iron-based sulfide OER and HER electrocatalysts. We believe that iron-based sulfide materials will have a wide range of application prospects as OER and HER electrocatalysts in the future.
