Identity federation is a powerful scheme that links accounts of users maintained distinctly by different business partners. The concept of network identity is a driver for accelerating automation of Web Services on the Internet for users on their behalf while protecting privacy of their personally identifiable information. Although users of Web Services essentially delegate some or all privileges to an entity to perform actions, current identity based systems do not take into sufficient consideration delegation between entities hosting Web Services from a viewpoint of identity and privacy. This paper introduces a delegation model for federated identity management systems and proposes a delegation framework to provide solutions for access control in the context of delegation. The framework has a function of transferring user's privileges across the entities encoded in delegation assertion extending SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language). The framework enables users to manage their own privileges, and service providers to control access of entities based on delegated privileges by the users with assistance of a delegation authority that authorizes delegation of a delegating entity and an authentication authority that authenticates a user and manages user's name identifiers.

Systems and methods for authentication generate keys from secret credentials shared between authenticating parties and authenticators. Generation of the keys may involve utilizing specialized information in the form of parameters that are used to specialize keys. Keys and/or information derived from keys held by multiple authorities may be used to generate other keys such that signatures requiring such keys and/or information can be verified without access to the keys. Keys may also be derived to form a hierarchy of keys that are distributed such that a key holder's ability to decrypt data depends on the key's position in the hierarchy relative to the position of a key used to encrypt the data. Key hierarchies may also be used to distribute key sets to content processing devices to enable the devices to decrypt content such that sources or potential sources of unauthorized content are identifiable from the decrypted content.

Embodiments of the claimed subject matter provide a method and an apparatus for enabling delegated authentication for web services. Delegated authentication is provided without divulging the information the user requires to complete an authorization procedure of another web service or otherwise subjecting the user to unnecessary risk. Furthermore, delegated authentication is granted for a limited duration and access is subject to further limitations to prevent unnecessary intrusion to the user, the user's data, and the host web service. One embodiment of the claimed subject matter is implemented as a method for enabling delegated authentication to allow a third party service access to protected data on a host service. A user attempting to utilize functionality of a third party website that requests access to the user's data stored on a separate host website is enabled as a delegate with authorization to access the data stored on the host website.

In an example implementation, a bifurcated security scheme has a first level that does not allow usage of negations and a second level that does permit usage of negations. In another example implementation, an authorization query table maps respective resource-specific operations to respective associated authorization queries. In yet another example implementation, authorization queries are permitted to have negations, but individual assertions are not.

Systems and methods for authentication generate keys from secret credentials shared between authenticating parties and authenticators. Generation of the keys may involve utilizing specialized information that, as a result of being used to generate the keys, renders the generated keys usable for a smaller scope of uses than the secret credential. Further, key generation may involve multiple invocations of a function where each of at least a subset of the invocations of the function results in a key that has a smaller scope of permissible use than a key produced from a previous invocation of the function. Generated keys may be used as signing keys to sign messages. One or more actions may be taken depending on whether a message and/or the manner in which the message was submitted complies with restrictions of the a key's use.

Parameter based key derivation

Users of Web and grid services often must temporarily delegate some or all of their rights to a software entity to perform actions on their behalf. The problem with the typical grid services approach (X. 509 proxy certificates) is that commercial Web services tooling fails to recognize these certificates or process them properly. The security assertion markup language (SAML) is a standardized XML-based framework for exchanging authentication, authorization and attribute information. SAML has broadening commercial support but lacks delegation capabilities. To address this shortcoming, we exploit SAML's inherent extensibility to create a delegation framework for Web and grid services that supports both direct and indirect delegation. We develop a set of verification rules for delegation tokens that rely on WS-Security X.509 signatures, but do not force any trust relationship between the delegatee and the target service. We have implemented the framework on two common Web service hosting environments: Java/Tomcat and .NET. By leveraging existing Web services standards, we make it easier for Grid practitioners to build and consume Web and grid services without resorting to grid-specific protocols.
