Content-aware texture deformation with dynamic control

In this paper, we presented a method of 3D model texture mapping based on projection and viewpoints and this method could enhance the sense of reality of 3D model. Firstly, we proposed a regional division algorithm based on viewpoints of 3D surface gird model. By choosing different viewpoints, the 3D model surface gird is divided into reasonable number of regions. Secondly, we presented a texture coordinates method based on normalized projection. So different regions get the corresponding texture coordinates information effectively by normalizing projection transformation. Thirdly, texture coordinate, the 3D model space geometry information and views of the corresponding viewpoints are combined together to render the scene. Then texture mapping is completed in the end. The method has proven to be correct and effective through the positive experimental results of different 3D model.

Texture Mapping Based on Projection and Viewpoints

In this thesis, we present a new approach to rendering deforming textured surfaces that takes into account variations in elasticity of the materials represented in the texture. Our approach is based on dynamically warping the parameterisation so that parameterisation distortion in a deformed pose is locally similar to the rest pose; this similarity results in apparent rigidity of the mapped texture material. The warps are also weighted, so that users have control over what appears rigid and what not. Our algorithms achieve real-time generation of warps, including their application in rendering the textured surfaces. A key factor to the achieved performance is the exploitation of the parallel nature of local optimisations by implementing the algorithms on the GPU. We demonstrate our approach with several example applications. We show warps on models using standard texture mapping as well as Ptex. We also show warps using static or dynamic/procedural texture detail, while the surface that it is mapped on deforms. A variety of use-cases is also provided: generating warps for looping animations, generating out-of-core warps of film-quality assets, approximating high-resolution warps with lower-resolution texture-space Linear Blend Skinning and dynamically preserving texture features of a model being interactively edited by an artist.

Real-time Rendering of Complex, Heterogeneous Mesostructure on Deformable Surfaces

Meshes obtained by 3D scanning or photogrammetry are usually very dense and multi-chart textured. Effectively reducing the amount of data while preserving both geometry and appearance is an important and also challenging problem. This paper presents a new method for seamless simplification of dense triangular meshes with multi-chart textures. The method is composed of three components: geometry simplification, correspondence map construction and texture image generation. The core of the method lies in the ideas of decoupling geometry, UV-parameterization and texture processes to make the simplification process less constrained by the underlying attribute encoding, a reliable updating procedure for constructing the correspondence map between the simplified and original meshes, and a least squares model for filling texture elements, which are the key to producing artifact-free visual appearance. Compared to the state-of-the-art, the proposed method has several advantages: (1) it enables aggressive simplification with well preserved geometry and appearance; (2) it automatically achieves seamless simplification without special treatment on the seams between multi-charts of the texture; and (3) it is reliable. Experimental results have demonstrated these features.

Matching of geometrically and topologically changing meshes

Interactively mapping texture into a curved surface has wide applications. Apart from mapping texture to desired positions with low distortions, which has been considered by existing works, few work considered the intuitive need to distribute distortions according to the texture contents. In this work, we present a texture mapping method guided by importance map to preserve the shape of the prominent content. We formulate it as an importance-value-weighted parameterization. The mapping distortions are measured by LSCM+ energy, which is capable of decreasing the appearance of shrunken and fold-over triangles as well as shape preservation; and the weights are efficiently calculated by transforming the area integral into a line integral. To solve the parameterization, we employ the ‘L–M’ (Levenberg–Marquardt) method and alternately update the weights and the coordinates since they are dependent on each other. Finally, we show some examples to demonstrate the content-aware effect by comparison to traditional parameterization.
