A matrix converter (38) converts three-phase AC power input from a first motor-generator (MG1) directly to three-phase AC power for driving a second motor-generator (MG2) and outputs the resultant three-phase AC power, without rectifying the three-phase AC power generated by the first motor-generator (MG1) once to DC power as in an example using a conventional three-phase full-wave rectification inverter. In a power supply system for a vehicle (14), the three-phase AC power is transmitted and received between two motor-generators (MG1, MG2) more directly, by means of the matrix converter (38). Therefore, power loss can be reduced, as compared with a conventional example in which the three-phase AC power is once converted to DC power. Thus, a power supply system for a vehicle with improved energy efficiency and a vehicle including the same can be provided.

A matrix converter apparatus having both a step-up voltage output function and a step-down voltage output function. A matrix converter apparatus wherein the phases of a three-phase AC power supply (1) are directly connected to the phases of an output side by use of the bidirectional switches comprising an anti-parallel connection of IGBT transistors or the like and wherein the AC power supply voltages are subjected to a PWM voltage output control based on an output voltage instruction, thereby outputting any desired cross-flow voltages. Reactors (61,62,63) are inserted and connected between the respective phases of the three-phase AC power supply (1) and the bidirectional switches. The bidirectional switches are ON/OFF controlled such that the terminals of at least two of the reactors on the side of the bidirectional switches are short-circuited and thereafter opened, thereby boosting the output voltages of the matrix converter apparatus. At the time of switching from the short-circuit to the opening, the conduction paths of the currents having flowed in the short-circuited reactors are secured by the ON/OFF control of the group of bidirectional switches (5) and by a group of capacitors (7).

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost by reducing a voltage being applied to a bidirectional switch at the time of current interruption thereby reducing the breakdown voltage of an element (switch). SOLUTION: A bidirectional switch is simply contained in one package in a conventional bidirectional switch module, but diode series circuits 4-7 for overvoltage protection of bidirectional switch are incorporated in the inventive bidirectional switch module so that wiring inductance between bidirectional switches 1-3 is reduced. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the low price of the entire equipment and the simplification of circuit configuration by reducing loss arising in a semiconductor element, and the number of elements, without marring such a merit that the number of harmonic wave components is few in an output voltage. SOLUTION: A semiconductor switch series circuit, in which first to fourth semiconductor switches S 1 -S 4 are connected in series, and a series circuit, which is composed of first and second capacitors C 1 and C 2 , are connected each in parallel with a DC power source E. A bidirectional switch series circuit, in which first and second bidirectional switches S 5D and S 6D capable of breaking bidirectional currents and having bidirectional breakdown voltages are connected in series, and a third capacitor C 3 are connected each in parallel with a series circuit, which is composed of second and third semiconductor switches S 2 and S 3 . The serial junction between the first and second capacitors C 1 and C 2 and the serial junction between the first and second bidirectional switches S 5D and S 6D are connected in series. SOLUTION: The AC-AC direct converter comprises an input voltage detection means 4, a load current detection means 5, a means 6 for operating the on/off time ratio command value of a two-way switch by using input voltage and output voltage commands, a means 8 for generating PWM pulse by adding the on/off time ratio command value to a commutation sequence, and a correction means 7 for calculating the commutation error time ratio generated by the commutation sequence for preventing power supply short-circuiting and load end opening from the carrier period, the commutation time and the polarity of load current and determining the final on/off time ratio command value, by correcting the on/off time ratio command value, based on the commutation error time ratio. SOLUTION: The PWM cycloconverter has bidirectional switches, having self-arc-extinguishing capability, which directly connect the phases of an alternating-current power supply and the phases on the output side. The PWM cycloconverter PWM-controls alternating-current supply voltage, according to an output voltage command and outputs arbitrary alternating-current and direct-current voltages. The PWM cycloconverter is provided with an input voltage detection circuit, which detects input supply voltage and with an input supply voltage information signal generation circuit which generates an input supply voltage information signal, based on the voltage signal detected by the input voltage detection circuit. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protection method for a PWM cycloconverter capable of suppressing a surge voltage generated in blocking the PWM cycloconverter, reducing the capacitance of a surge-absorbing capacitor and reducing applied voltages at both ends of a blocked two-way switch. SOLUTION: When an abnormality occurs, a total output terminal of a motor 5 is connected to one arbitrary phase of a three-phase AC power supply 1 by a two-way switching group 4, to put the motor 5 in a state of an output being short-circuited, and an input part and an output part of the PWM cycloconverter are separated from each other. A short-circuited current is then made to flow to each output phase by an induced voltage of the motor 5. By blocking the two-way switch of a corresponding phase at a zero cross of each short-circuited current, a rise in voltage between terminals of a snubbering capacitor 6 is restrained, to enable the PWM cycloconverter to safely be stopped. Furthermore, with the one arbitrary phase of the three-phase AC power supply 1, which connects the total output terminal of the motor 5, as an intermediate voltage phase, the applied voltages at both the ends of the blocked two-way switch are reduced.
