A review of mathematical models for composting

Microorganisms are regarded as a sustainable source of biologically active molecules. Among them, Trichoderma spp. have been an attractive source of biological compounds. However, the study of marine-derived Trichoderma has developed slowly because of the difficulty in isolating the fungi. In our study, 30 strains of marine-derived Trichoderma were identified through the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1α) sequences, and their biological activities, such as antioxidant activity by ABTS and DPPH assays, antifungal activity against Asteromyces cruciatus and Lindra thalassiae, and tyrosinase inhibition activity, were investigated. As a result, the 30 marine Trichoderma species were classified into 21 taxa, including three new species candidates. Three strains of T. asperellum showed the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity and antifungal activity. T. bissettii SFC20170821-M05 and T. guizhouense SFC20180619-M23 showed notable DPPH radical scavenging activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity, respectively. This study showed the potential of marine-derived Trichoderma as a source of bioactive compounds.

Diversity of Trichoderma spp. in Marine Environments and Their Biological Potential for Sustainable Industrial Applications

With the rapid development of large and medium-sized biogas projects, the high-value utilization of anaerobic fermentation residues has become a hot spot in recent years. In this study, biogas residue from biogas engineering was used as composting raw material, and 0 (CK), 2.5% (T1), 5.0% (T2), 7.5% (T3), and 10.0% (T4) biochar was added to investigate its effects on physico-chemical properties, microbial populations, and maturity degree during the aerobic composting process. Results show that the addition of biochar shortens the time (3 days) to reach the high-temperature period, increases the composting temperature (63.8 °C) and germination index (GI), decreases the electrical conductivity (EC), reduces the loss of C and N elements, and increases the microbial population during composting. These results suggest that biochar can improve the maturity and fertility of compost products, and significantly regulate the structure and function of microbial communities during the composting process.

Municipalities output large amounts of solid waste into landfills, but degradation slows during the middle and late stages of treatment. Therefore, accelerating the treatment of degradable substances to achieve rapid stabilization, excavation, screening, and reuse would increase landfill utility and reduce economic costs. This article provides an aerobic degradation model for landfilled municipal solid waste that includes two types of biochemical reactions. Using degradable solid-phase organic matter and ammonia nitrogen as limiting substrates, an equation describing degradation over time was obtained. Both aerobic organic matter hydrolysis and the synchronous nitrification and denitrification reaction followed a kinetic, first-order equation. The influences of temperature, water content, oxygen concentration, and carbon to nitrogen ratio on the kinetic reactions were considered. Similarly, the exothermic reaction characteristics were considered. The model was applied to two previously conducted experiments. The results showed that the model can accurately reflect the degradation laws of various substances under aerobic degradation conditions. SDC and ammonia nitrogen were rapidly degraded and reached very low levels in a short time under aerobic conditions. This indicated that aeration has a significant effect on the degradation of aged waste, which can be used in the accelerated stabilization of aged landfills in the future.

In this work, the impact of exogenous aerobic bacteria mixture (EABM) on municipal solid waste (MSW) is well evaluated in the following aspects: biogas production, leachate analysis, organic waste degradation, EABM population, and the composition of microbial communities. The study was designed and performed as follows: the control bioreactor (R1) was filled up with MSW and the culture medium of EABM and the experimental bioreactor (R2) was filled up with MSW and EABM. The data suggests that the composition of microbial communities (bacterial and methanogenic) in R1 and R2 were similar at day 0, while the addition of EABM in R2 led to a differential abundance of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphlyoccus xylosus, and Pantoea agglomerans in two bioreactors. The population of exogenous aerobic bacteria in R2 greatly increased during hydrolysis and acidogenesis stages, and subsequently increased the degradation of volatile solid (VS), protein, lipid, and lignin by 59.25%, 25.68%, 60.47%, and 197.62%, respectively, compared to R1. The duration of hydrolysis and acidogenesis in R2 was 33.33% shorter than that in R1. At the end of the study, the accumulative methane yield in R2 (494.4 L) was almost three times more than that in R1 (187.4 L). In addition, the abundance of acetoclasic methanogens increased at acetogenesis and methanogenesis stages in both bioreactors, which indicates that acetoclasic methanogens (especially Methanoseata) could contribute to methane production. This study demonstrates that EABM can accelerate organic waste degradation to promote MSW biodegradation and methane production. Moreover, the operational parameters helped EABM to generate 20.85% more in accumulative methane yield. With a better understanding of how EABM affects MSW and the composition of bacterial community, this study offers a potential practical approach to MSW disposal and cleaner energy generation worldwide.
