Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).

With the advent of the Internet, we are seeing more sophisticated techniques being developed to support e-Iearning. The rapid developme nt of Web-based learning and new concepts like virtual classrooms, virtual laboratories and virtual universities introduces many new issues to be addressed. On the technical side, we need to develop effective e-technologies for supporting distance education. On the learning and management side, we need to consider issues such as new style of learning and different system set-u p requirements. Finally, the issue of standardization of e-Iearning systems should also be considered. In this special issue, our focus will be on the technical side, although other issues related to knowledge and data engineering for e-Iearning may also be considered. Topics: In this special issue, we call for original papers describing novel knowledge and data engineering techniques that support e-Iearning. Preference will be given to papers that include an evaluation of users' experience in using the proposed methods. Areas of interests include, but are not limited to: • Semantic Web technology for e-Iearning • Data modeling (eg., XML) for efficient management of course materials • Searching and indexing techniques to suppo rt effective course notes retrieval • User-centric e-Iearning systems and user interaction management • Profiling techniques to support grading and learning recommendation • Data and knowledge base suppo rt for pervasive e-Iearning • Course material analysis and understanding • Automatic generation of questions and answers • Collaborative communities for e-Iearning

SVR-GARCH model tends to “backward eavesdrop” when forecasting the financial time series volatility in which case it tends to simply produce the prediction by deviating the previous volatility. Though the SVR-GARCH model has achieved good performance in terms of various performance measurements, trading opportunities, peak or trough behaviors in the time series are all hampered by underestimating or overestimating the volatility. We propose a blending ARCH (BARCH) and an augmented BARCH (aBARCH) model to overcome this kind of problem and make the prediction towards better peak or trough behaviors.The method is illustrated using real data sets including SH300 and S&P500. The empirical results obtained suggest that the augmented and blending models improve the volatility forecasting ability.

Dealing with missing values is one of the challenges in symbolic regression on many real-world data sets. One of the popular approaches to address this challenge is to use imputation. Traditional imputation methods are usually performed based on the predictive features without considering the original target variable. In this work, a genetic programming-based wrapper imputation method is proposed, which wrappers a regression method to consider the target variable when constructing imputation models for the incomplete features. In addition to the imputation performance, the regression performance is considered for evaluating the imputation models. Genetic programming (GP) is used for building the imputation models and decision tree (DT) is used for evaluating the regression performance during the GP evolutionary process. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a significant advance in enhancing the symbolic regression performance compared with some state-of- the-art imputation methods.

Machine learning has been used in all kinds of fields In this article, we introduce how machine learning can be applied into time series problem Especially, we use the airline ticket prediction problem as our specific problem Airline companies use many different variables to determine the flight ticket prices: indicator whether the travel is during the holidays, the number of free seats in the plane etc Some of the variables are observed, but some of them are hidden Based on the data over a 103 day period, we trained our models, getting the best model - which is AdaBoost-Decision Tree Classification This algorithm has best performance over the observed 8 routes which has 6135$\%$ better performance than the random purchase strategy, and relatively small variance over these routes And we also considered the situation that we cannot get too much historical datas for some routes (for example the route is new and does not have historical data) or we do not want to train historical data to predict to buy or wait quickly, in which problem, we used HMM Sequence Classification based AdaBoost-Decision Tree Classification to perform our prediction on 12 new routes Finally, we got 3171$\%$ better performance than the random purchase strategy
