Introducing innovative technologies in higher education: An experience in using geographic information systems for the teaching‐learning process

Combined with the spatial data processing capability of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the Pan Jiazheng method is extended from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D), and a 3D landslide surge height calculation method is proposed based on grid column units. First, the data related to the landslide are rasterized to form grid columns, and a force analysis model of 3D landslides is established. Combining the vertical strip method with Newton's laws of motion, dynamic equilibrium equations are established to solve the surge height. Moreover, a 3D landslide surge height calculation expansion module is developed in the GIS environment, and the results are compared with those of the 2D Pan Jiazheng method. Comparisons showed that the maximum surge height obtained by the proposed method is 24.6% larger than that based on the Pan Jiazheng method. Compared with the traditional 2D method, the 3D method proposed in this paper better represent the actual spatial state of the landslide and is more suitable for risk assessment.

Novel Model for Limit-Equilibrium Analysis of Slope Stability with a Nonlinear Strength Criterion

The problem of the slope stability of open pit mines is one of constant interest and great importance, both during the period of operation, but also post-closure. The research focused on the Oltețu open pit (located in Berbesti Mining Basin, Romania) and was directed in such a way as to allow consideration in the stability analyses of natural (predisposing the investigated area to landslides) and anthropogenic (specific to open pit mining) factors and causes as well as their combined effect. The field investigations (observations on the technical condition of the slopes, discussions with the technical personnel from Oltețu open pit, and sampling) were completed with analyses and laboratory tests (physical–mechanical properties of rocks in the composition of the slopes). The stability analyses took into account different hypotheses related to the actual geometry of the working slopes, and a predictive analysis was also carried out for the forecasted evolution of the working fronts and lateral slopes. Following stability analyses, it was found that for most slopes, the stability reserve is insufficient to allow continuing lignite exploitation under safe conditions. The last part of the paper presents the solutions identified by the authors (adoption of new geometries of the working front and lateral slopes) in order to increase the stability reserve to a minimum acceptable level, which would allow the safe continuation of lignite extraction, and, in the end, some practical recommendations are briefly presented.

Slope stability is a topic of great importance in civil engineering, as slope failures can cause considerable damage to infrastructure and downstream properties. In this study, we applied the Fellenius slice method, using both the analytical method, as well as the numerical method, which was performed using the SLOPE/W module of the Geostudio software. The results obtained by both methods showed that the increase in soil cohesion improves the stability of the slope. The safety coefficients obtained by the analytical method vary between 0.534 and 1.086, while those obtained by the numerical method vary between 0.539 and 1.096, for cohesion values ranging from 4 kPa to 20 kPa. The safety coefficients obtained by the analytical and numerical methods follow straight lines of equation y=0.0344x+0.4092 and y=0.0345x+0.4169, respectively. The results of the analytical method show that a safety factor of 1.5 is achieved at a value of 32 kPa for the cohesion, while the numerical method shows a safety factor of 1.5 achieved at a value of 32 kPa for the cohesion. The difference between the two cohesions is explained by the smaller number of slices used in the analytical method. Nevertheless, the equation from the analytical method can be used as a general guide to evaluate the evolution of the safety coefficient of a slope with surcharge under long-term behavior with incremental cohesion, but this does not exclude verification by dedicated software based on the finite element method.

Assessment of Slope Stability by the Fellenius Slice Method: Analytical and numerical approach

The study proposes a geographic information systems (GIS)-based slope stability analysis method assuming a normal stress distribution acting on the slip surface. Compared with traditional methods, the three-dimensional (3D) safety factor acquired through this method will more closely approximate the actual value. First, a 3D slope stability analysis model is developed using grid column units, and the spatial expression of calculation parameters based on the grid column is given by the spatial analysis capability of GIS. Then, four equilibrium equations are derived under the limit equilibrium condition. The normal stress distribution acting on the slip surface is analyzed to construct a reasonable normal stress distribution approximation function. The 3D safety factor is obtained through the approximation function and the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. Moreover, we develop a GIS-based extension module which combines the grid-based data with the 3D slope stability analysis model. The accuracy and feasibility of the module are verified by three typical cases.
