Flexible structures may experience excessive levels of vibration under the action of wind , adversely affecting serviceability and occupant comfort. To ensure the functional performance of a structure, various design modifications are possible, ranging from alternative structural systems to the utilization of passive and active control devices. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art measures that reduce the structural response of buildings, including a summary of recent work in aerodynamic tailoring and a discussion of auxiliary damping devices for mitigating the wind-induced motion of structures. In addition, some discussion of the application of such devices to improve structural resistance to seismic events is also presented, concluding with detailed examples of the application of auxiliary damping devices in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

Mitigation of motions of tall buildings with specific examples of recent applications

Electro-rheological (ER) fluids are now regarded as one of the most versatile of the materials available for building smart structures and machines. In principle, ER fluids promise an elegant means of providing continuously variable forces for the control of mechanical vibrations. In practice, the development of industrial devices has been hampered by the unavailability of suitable ER fluids. Prompted by recent advances in ER fluid development this paper provides a comprehensive survey of ER devices for vibration control. The key modes of operation are identified and progress towards a unified approach to visualizing the macroscopic behaviour is summarized before presenting a comprehensive survey which includes contributions to the identification of ER fluid dynamics and the application of feedback control. The discussion of results includes some thoughts on future trends.

Many electroactive functional materials have been used in small- and microscale transducers and precision mechatronic control systems for years. It was not until the mid-1980s that scientists started integrating electroactive materials with large-scale structures as in situ sensors and/or actuators, thus introducing the concept of smart materials, smart structures, and structronic systems. This paper provides an overview of present smart materials and their sensor/actuator/structure applications. Electro-Rheological fluid (ERF) has notable characteristics of viscosity which could be applicable for various industrial machines. Viscosity of ERF increases in accordance with the applied electric field. Without an electric field, ERF has the viscosity characteristics of a Newtonian liquid. Variation of viscosity is reversible, and the required time for variation is said to be as short as 0.001 sec. Numerous applications of ERF in the engineering field have been attempted since the characteristics of ERF were discovered by W. M. Winslow. However, no successful application has ever been reported. This paper deals with the successful application of ERF to a squeeze film damper. It is elucidated that the squeeze film damper with ERF is quite effective for the reduction of vibration for any rotor system. First and second critical speeds can be easily passed without large vibration amplitude. It is also shown experimentally that there may be the most effective damping ratios for every mode of the rotor. Transition phenomena of the modes in accordance with supported damping are clarified in the present experiment.
