The terahertz (THz) antennas, which have features of small size, wide frequency bandwidth and high data rate, are important devices for transmitting and receiving THz electromagnetic waves in the emerging THz systems. However, most of THz antennas suffer from relatively high loss and low fabrication precision due to their small sizes in high frequency bands of THz waves. Therefore, this paper presents a detailed overview of the most recent research on the performance improvement of THz antennas. Firstly, the development of THz antennas is briefly reviewed and the basic design ideas of THz antennas are introduced. Then, THz antennas are categorized as metallic antennas, dielectric antennas and new material antennas. After that, the latest research progress in THz photoconductive antennas, THz horn antennas, THz lens antennas, THz microstrip antennas and THz on-chip antennas are discussed. In particular, the practical difficulties for the development of THz antennas are discussed with promising approaches. In addition, this paper also presents a short review of the process technology of THz antennas. Finally, the vital challenges and the future research directions for THz antennas are presented.

Antenna in 6G wireless communication system: Specifications, challenges, and research directions

The ever-growing demand for low power, high performance, cost-effective, low-profile, and highly integrated wireless systems for emerging applications has triggered the need for the enormous innovations in wireless transceiver systems, components, architectures and technologies. This is especially valid for the antenna which is an integral component of the wireless transceiver systems and contributes significantly in determining their overall performance. Antenna-on-Chip (AoC) is an alternative antenna technology, which has drawn a substantial attention in recent days because of its various benefits over off-chip antenna technology. A few of these benefits include miniaturization, low power, low cost, and high integration of the wireless modules. Motivated by these valuable advantages and to unveil the true potential of the AoCs, this article presents, for the first time, a comprehensive survey of the suitability, advantages, and challenges of the AoCs for the emerging wireless applications such as 5th generation (5G) Wireless Systems, Internet-of-Things (IoT) Wireless Devices and Systems, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Wireless Interconnects, Wireless Energy Transfer, Radio Frequency (RF) Energy Harvesting, Biomedical Implants, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Autonomous vehicles, Innovative characterization methods for Integrated Circuits (ICs) and Antennas, and Smart City. In addition, this article presents the current state-of-the-art of the AoC's applications by classifying their applications in Millimeter-Wave (MM-Wave) band, Terahertz (THz) band, and low-frequency bands. The article also investigates and describes some useful methods for the mitigation of the challenges and issues posed by the emerging applications for the realization of the AoCs in a systematic manner. A concise description of the future directions of the AoCs with respect to each emerging application is also a part of this article. It is expected that this well-structured and organized survey will not only act as an excellent source of scholarship for the relevant research community, but also open up a world of novel research opportunities.

The Potentials, Challenges, and Future Directions of On-Chip-Antennas for Emerging Wireless Applications—A Comprehensive Survey

The need for a compact, economical, and low-power wireless system has given birth to the System-on-Chip (SoC) concept viable of a multitude of innovative applications. On-Chip-Antennas (AoCs) are an integral part of the SoC based wireless system and have got a remarkable attention since last one decade. In contrary to off-chip-antennas, AoCs are fabricated and integrated on the same substrate where the other components of the wireless system are fabricated. This integration results in several challenges besides highly desired benefits. The most serious challenge is the degradation in AoC’s key performance metrics, i.e. gain and radiation efficiency because of low-resistivity and high-permittivity of the Silicon substrate which is the optimized choice for the AoC design. This triggers a need for the use of novel methods for the mitigation of these performance issues. Consequently, a variety of such innovative methods have been proposed in the literature. However, a critical description on the recent developments in these methods at one place to facilitate a wide range of researchers is missing. Therefore, this article presents a well-organized and systematic survey on the recent advancements of the AoC’s performance-issues-mitigation-methods for wireless applications in Radio Frequency (RF), Millimeter-Wave (MM-Wave), and Terahertz (THz) bands for the first time. A concise description of future directions with respect to AoCs performance enhancement methods is also part of this article. It is anticipated that the critical presentation of these methods will make this article a valuable guide for a wide spectrum of researchers, who want to adventure with the tough task of high performance AoC design. In addition, it is envisioned that this article will pave a promising path for a further dominance of the AoCs in RF, MM-Wave, and THz regions.

Performance-Issues-Mitigation-Techniques for On-Chip-Antennas – Recent Developments in RF, MM-Wave, and Thz Bands With Future Directions

Interest of Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) antennas in Terahertz (THz) applications has rapidly expanded in recent years due to the advent of accurate Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools. The very special needs of newly proposed MEMS antennas, especially with a wide bandwidth range, require advanced optimization procedures of enhancing already established designs. This paper provides a compact design of a wideband MEMS helix antenna optimized using tree-dimensional High Frequency Structure Simulator (3D-HFSS) based on Quasi-Newton (Q-N) and Sequential Non Linear Programming (SNLP) techniques to modify the antenna structure with a high accuracy for the selective band of frequencies by training the samples and minimizing the error from Finite Element Method- (FEM) based simulation tool. The helix antenna is presented using MEMS technology and shows high performance demonstrated by very low return losses of less than -20 to -65 dB for a wide range of frequencies from 2.5 to 5 THz. High antenna geometry precision and efficient performance are finally achieved by rectifying and synthesizing various tunable parameters embedded in silicon substrate including both helix form and feeding line parameters.

Development and Performance Enhancement of MEMS Helix Antenna for THz Applications using 3D HFSS-based Efficient Electromagnetic Optimization

In this work, a novel design tor a tully on-chip 3D antenna operating at 4 THz that can be fabricated by a novel MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) technology directly realized on a silicon substrate is presented. The antenna includes two parts, the metallic helix and the microstrip on the substrate for feed. The proposed antenna structure is well suitable designed by MEMS technology, the fabrication of the structure needs only one wafer, and the antenna can be easily integrated with other parts of on-chip circuits. The antenna is characterized by high gain (17.6 dBi) and wide relative bandwidth (44%) from 2.8THz to 4.4THz. There are many tunable parameters of the helix, so that high performance THz antenna can be achieved by optimizing these parameters. The proposed antenna can be manufactured by MEMS processing with low fabrication cost, suitable for many THz systems.
