Recent advances in luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) based fluorescent sensors for antibiotics

Developing metal–organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescent probes for efficient detection and discrimination of polluting ions in groundwater is vital for environmental protection and human health. In this paper, we prepared two luminescence-active transition MOFs, namely, Zn-MOF and Cd-MOF, and conducted sensing experiments. The results show that they both exhibit multiple-target detection for Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(VI) with high sensitivity, good anti-interference ability and good recyclability even with different frameworks. In addition, Eu3+-incorporated samples, Eu3+@MOFs, with dual-emission have been fabricated via efficient encapsulation of Eu3+ ions into the MOF host. As expected, Eu3+@MOF hybrids also act as multi-target and self-calibrated probes to selectively detect Fe3+ and Cr(VI) ions. However, the quenching efficiencies of the original MOFs towards Fe3+ are higher than those of Eu3+@MOFs. Thus, we could differentiate Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(VI) ions by comparing the changes of fluorescence emission between Eu3+@MOFs and the original MOFs. The recognition mechanism may be attributed to the competitive energy absorption between MOFs or Eu3+@MOFs and the analytes.

Fluorescent chemosensors based on coordination polymers (CPs) have received particular attention in monitoring the pH values and appropriate analytes in environmental and biological systems owing to their extreme superiorities. Herein, a novel solvent-dependent fluorescent Co(II)-CP, [Co(asba)(2-mmzm)(H2O)2]·3H2O (1), was obtained through the assembly between Co2+ and 2-amino-4-sulfobenzoic acid (H2asba) in the presence of the flexible hydrophobic ligand 1,4-bis[(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene (2-mmzm). 1 is a 1D coordination polymer, which is further linked by a 1D hydrogen-bonded tape into a 3D supramolecular network. 1 shows high hydrolytic stability as well as strong acidic and basic resistance. Remarkably, 1 is a quite rare example that shows dual responsive fluorescence sensing of pH and Cu2+. 1 shows distinct sensing behavior toward pH with interesting different sensing mechanisms in three continuous pH ranges. Moreover, 1 demonstrates high accuracy in determining the pH of artificial gastric juices. 1 could also sensitively and selectively sense Cu2+ ions over a number of interfering metal ions. The limit of detection (LOD) for Cu2+ reaches the 2.4 μM level.

A newly-constructed hydrolytically stable Co(II) coordination polymer showing dual responsive fluorescence sensing of pH and Cu2+

The manuscript presents a zirconium metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF or UiO-66-NH2) based efficient sensing system to detect nitrofurazone (NFZ) antibiotic, by employing electrochemical-optical dual detection technique. The Zr-MOF was synthesized by solvothermal method and the success of synthesis was confirmed by using analytical techniques of characterization. For electrochemical determination of NFZ, electrodeposited gold nanoparticles supported zirconium metal–organic framework modified screen-printed electrode (AuNPs/UiO-66-NH2/SPCE) was used. As prepared electrochemical sensing platform showed a wide linear concentration range of 1x10−8 to 5x10−5 mol/L for NFZ. For fluorometric measurements, synthesized UiO-66-NH2 was employed under optimized conditions, and a turn-off behavior of NFZ towards UiO-66-NH2 was observed from a range of concentration 1x10−8 to 4.5x10−5 mol/L of NFZ. The proposed opto-electrochemical sensor attained low detection limit in nM range, showed selective behavior in presence of other antibiotics, and gave a reproducible signal with the RSD value less than 2.5% (n = 5). The prepared sensor was tested to detect NFZ in lake water samples and the results indicated good percentage recovery in the range 97.70–98.40 and 93.30–97.84%, for electrochemical and optical methods, respectively.
