Simple Summary The integration of fish in rice fields can influence the diversity and structural composition of soil microbial communities. Therefore, soil microorganisms between rice–fish co-culture (RF) and rice monoculture (MC) were compared. The key findings revealed that Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Planctomycetes were the most dominant taxa across both paddy fields. The most abundant genus in MC belonged to Anaeromyxobacter, whereas that in RF was Bacillus. Nitrogen fixation, aromatic compound degradation, and hydrocarbon degradation were more abundant in RF. Phosphatase, β-glucosidase, cellulase, and urease enzymes were detected in both paddy fields. However, a 2-year conversion from organic rice to rice–fish co-culture may not be long enough to significantly alter alpha diversity indices. Abstract Soil microorganisms play an important role in determining nutrient cycling. The integration of fish into rice fields can influence the diversity and structural composition of soil microbial communities. However, regarding the rice–fish co-culture (RF) farming system in Thailand, the study of the diversity and composition of soil microbes is still limited. Here, we aim to compare the microbial diversity, community composition, and functional structure of the bacterial communities between RF and rice monoculture (MC) farming systems and identify the environmental factors shaping bacterial community composition. Bacterial taxonomy was observed using 16s rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and the functional structures of the bacterial communities were predicted based on their taxonomy and sequences. The results showed that soil organic carbon, total nitrogen (TN), organic matter, available phosphorous, and clay content were significantly higher in RF than in MC. The most dominant taxa across both paddy rice fields belonged to Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Planctomycetes. The taxa Nitrosporae, Rokubacteria, GAL15, and Elusimicrobia were significantly different between both rice fields. At the genus level, Bacillus, Anaeromyxobacter, and HSB OF53-F07 were the predominant genera in both rice fields. The most abundant genus in MC was Anaeromyxobacter, whereas RF belonged to Bacillus. The community composition in MC was positively correlated with magnesium and sand content, while in RF was positively correlated with pH, TN, and clay content. Nitrogen fixation, aromatic compound degradation, and hydrocarbon degradation were more abundant in RF, while cellulolysis, nitrification, ureolysis, and phototrophy functional groups were more abundant in MC. The enzymes involved in paddy soil ecosystems included phosphatase, β-glucosidase, cellulase, and urease. These results provide novel insights into integrated fish in the paddy field as an efficient agricultural development strategy for enhancing soil microorganisms that increase soil fertility.

Soil Microbial Diversity and Community Composition in Rice–Fish Co-Culture and Rice Monoculture Farming System

Bt proteins are crystal proteins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in the early stage of spore formation that exhibit highly specific insecticidal activities. The application of Bt proteins primarily includes Bt transgenic plants and Bt biopesticides. Transgenic crops with insect resistance (via Bt)/herbicide tolerance comprise the largest global area of agricultural planting. After artificial modification, Bt insecticidal proteins expressed from Bt can be released into soils through root exudates, pollen, and plant residues. In addition, the construction of Bt recombinant engineered strains through genetic engineering has become a major focus of Bt biopesticides, and the expressed Bt proteins will also remain in soil environments. Bt proteins expressed and released by Bt transgenic plants and Bt recombinant strains are structurally and functionally quite different from Bt prototoxins naturally expressed by B. thuringiensis in soils. The former can thus be regarded as an environmentally exogenous substance with insecticidal toxicity that may have potential ecological risks. Consequently, biosafety evaluations must be conducted before field tests and production of Bt plants or recombinant strains. This review summarizes the adsorption, retention, and degradation behavior of Bt insecticidal proteins in soils, in addition to their impacts on soil physical and chemical properties along with soil microbial diversity. The review provides a scientific framework for evaluating the environmental biosafety of Bt transgenic plants, Bt transgenic microorganisms, and their expression products. In addition, prospective research targets, research methods, and evaluation methods are highlighted based on current research of Bt proteins.

Environmental Behaviors of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Insecticidal Proteins and Their Effects on Microbial Ecology

Ecosystem sustainability of rice and aquatic animal co-culture systems and a synthesis of its underlying mechanisms.

The soil microbial carbon pump (MCP) is increasingly acknowledged as being directly linked to soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation and stability. Given the close coupling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles and the constraints imposed by their stoichiometry on microbial growth, N addition might affect microbial growth strategies with potential consequences for necromass formation and carbon stability. However, this topic remains largely unexplored. Based on two multi-level N fertilizer experiments over 10 years in two soils with contrasting soil fertility located in the North (Cambisol, carbon-poor) and Southwest (Luvisol, carbon-rich), we hypothesized that different resource demands of microorganism elicit a trade-off in microbial growth potential (Y-strategy) and resource-acquisition (A-strategy) in response to N addition, and consequently on necromass formation and soil carbon stability. We combined measurements of necromass metrics (MCP efficacy) and soil carbon stability (chemical composition and mineral associated organic carbon) with potential changes in microbial life history strategies (assessed via soil metagenomes and enzymatic activity analyses). The contribution of microbial necromass to SOC decreased with N addition in the Cambisol, but increased in the Luvisol. Soil microbial life strategies displayed two distinct responses in two soils after N amendment: shift toward A-strategy (Cambisol) or Y-strategy (Luvisol). These divergent responses are owing to the stoichiometric imbalance between microbial demands and resource availability for C and N, which presented very distinct patterns in the two soils. The partial correlation analysis further confirmed that high N addition aggravated stoichiometric carbon demand, shifting the microbial community strategy toward resource-acquisition which reduced carbon stability in Cambisol. In contrast, the microbial Y-strategy had the positive direct effect on MCP efficacy in Luvisol, which greatly enhanced carbon stability. Such findings provide mechanistic insights into the stoichiometric regulation of MCP efficacy, and how this is mediated by site-specific trade-offs in microbial life strategies, which contribute to improving our comprehension of soil microbial C sequestration and potential optimization of agricultural N management.

Microbial life-history strategies mediate microbial carbon pump efficacy in response to N management depending on stoichiometry of microbial demand.

Controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer (CRN) is considered as an efficient tool for improving crop total uptake of N (TUN) and crop yield by providing better synchronization of crop N demand, but its effects on crop productivity, greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and N loss are variable across agroecosystems. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis by synthesizing 8874 observations from 240 published studies to address the effects of substituting CRN for readily available N fertilizer on crop yield, TUN, profit, GHG emissions, and N loss in rice, maize, wheat, soybean, and rape, with focus on cereals. Overall, CRN could increase crop productivity (crop yield, 5.1 %; profit, 8.2 %; TUN, 7.1 %) and reduce environmental pollution (GHG emissions, −3.6 % to − 18.6 %; N loss, −32.6 % to −49.1 %). These efficacies varied among crops but showed similar trends in general. The effect of CRN on crop yield was modulated by the N rate and the ratio of CRN. The optimal N rate and CRN ratio to obtain higher crop yields and profits also varied with crops. The CRN efficacies for decreasing GHG emissions and N loss depended on the mean growing season temperature, mean growing season precipitation, background soil total organic carbon content and pH values, the regions, and the CRN ratio and coating materials. A synergy of CRN with other crop management practices, such as mulching and efficient irrigation, was an effective strategy for increasing both crop productivity and environmental benefits. Substituting readily available nitrogen fertilizer with CRN could produce more food and obtain higher profits with less environmental risk in crops, especially in cereals. This study provides new insights into the effect of plant-soil-climate-management systems on crop productivity and environmental benefits for Sustainable Development Goals. 

Substituting readily available nitrogen fertilizer with controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer improves crop yield and nitrogen uptake while mitigating environmental risks: A global meta-analysis

Microbial necromass is an important source and component of soil organic matter (SOM), especially within the most stable pools. Global change factors such as anthropogenic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) inputs, climate warming, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2), and periodic precipitation reduction (drought) strongly affect soil microorganisms and consequently, influence microbial necromass formation. The impacts of these global change factors on microbial necromass are poorly understood despite their critical role in the cycling and sequestration of soil carbon (C) and nutrients. Here, we conducted a meta‐analysis to reveal general patterns of the effects of nutrient addition, warming, eCO2, and drought on amino sugars (biomarkers of microbial necromass) in soils under croplands, forests, and grasslands. Nitrogen addition combined with P and K increased the content of fungal (+21%), bacterial (+22%), and total amino sugars (+9%), consequently leading to increased SOM formation. Nitrogen addition alone increased solely bacterial necromass (+10%) because the decrease of N limitation stimulated bacterial more than fungal growth. Warming increased bacterial necromass, because bacteria have competitive advantages at high temperatures compared to fungi. Other global change factors (P and NP addition, eCO2, and drought) had minor effects on microbial necromass because of: (i) compensation of the impacts by opposite processes, and (ii) the short duration of experiments compared to the slow microbial necromass turnover. Future studies should focus on: (i) the stronger response of bacterial necromass to N addition and warming compared to that of fungi, and (ii) the increased microbial necromass contribution to SOM accumulation and stability under NPK fertilization, and thereby for negative feedback to climate warming.

With the rapid development of social economy in Guanzhong urban agglomeration, the living standards of the people has been greatly improved. Because of the extensive mode of development, environmental problems have also become the cost of economic development in Guanzhong urban agglomeration. Urban agglomeration is facing a series of environmental problems, such as ecological destruction, atmospheric pollution, water shortage and so on. Focusing on these issues, multi-source remote sensing data and auxiliary data are integrated to build a comprehensive and regional eco-environmental quality assessment model. The evaluation model is established based on the combination of Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process, Principal Component Analysis and Lagrange Multiplier. The results show that the quality of ecological environment in Guanzhong urban agglomeration shows a downward trend in general. The area of the eco-environmental quality index between 0.4-0.6 performs an upward trend, which transformed from other levels. The quality of ecological environment in Guanzhong urban agglomeration has gradually improved from north to south. The southern part of Guanzhong urban agglomeration is Qinling Nature Reserve, which Contains a lot of woodland and has high ecological environment quality.
