Since the description of efficient electroluminescence from aluminium tris(hydroxyquinoline) in the mid 1980s, interest in new complexes and polymers with luminescence properties as emitting layers in light-emitting diodes has steadily increased. Recently, Ln(III) ion complexes have gained in importance for this type of application. Here we review some of the seminal work in the area, along with new developments in the field. The photophysical characterization of complexes of lanthanide ions both in solution and in the solid state allows the determination of which of the complexes might be successfully utilized as emitting layers in light-emitting diodes for display applications. However, the architecture of the device is also of major importance, to allow for good charge transport and recombination and thus obtain pure colors and high emission quantum efficiency.

A polymer light emitting material, wherein the material has a light emitting mechanism based on transition from an excited triplet state to a ground state or transition through an excited triplet state to a ground state of an electron energy level, and the material comprises a nonionic light emitting part which constitutes a part of the polymer or is bound to the polymer. The polymer light emitting material exhibits high light emission efficiency above 5%, which is the limit of external quantum efficiency of fluorescence and can be designed so as to have a large area and hence are suitable for mass production of organic light emitting devices.

In this paper, a novel Eu3+ polymer named PRL basing on a new Eu-containing monomer was synthesized and was used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent device with single layer structure of ITO/PRL/Al. This material had strong photoluminescence, good chromaticity and can transport both holes and electrons. Being a polymer, the device made by use simple spin-coating method in stead of the usual doped spin-coating and vacuum deposition. The brightness of 80 cd/m2 was achieved at the voltage of 26 V. And we try to explain the mechanism of this EL device according to its photoluminescence, electroluminescence, B-V and I-V characteristic. And we also measured its mobility and explained the reason of its relatively high drive voltage and low luminescence
