The politics of multiculturalism: race and racism in contemporary Britain

This thesis advances two arguments for rethinking postsecular urbanism. First, it argues that it should be thought as a form of apophatic pluralism, wherein, while every religious or nonreligious group is empowered to find its modes of expression, none of their doctrines can be normative for the whole polity. To think pluralism via apophasis is to conceive space as the coming together of incommensurable monads, set free to search for truths while intermingling one another in the construction of the everyday. The second point is that its epistemic register must be that of imagination, framed as the noetic capacity of relating with the materiality and immateriality of the world. This work upholds that geography must try to pluralize imagination, to open the city to different processes of aesthesis and different conceptions of beauty. The work is composed by five chapters. The first is a theoretical review dedicated to matters of religious pluralism, secularization and secularism, and postsecular theories. The survey suggests that the notion of postsecularism should be redefined on the lines of apophatic pluralism. The second chapter is dedicated to geography of religion. It focuses on how geographical research addresses the materiality/immateriality of religion by looking at its outward and inward dimensions. The third chapter proposes an approach to geography of religion based on imagination, captured in the Aristotelian tradition as reshaped by post-Avicennan Islamic philosophy. It is advanced that the enigma of nous poietikos should be let open to different epistemics. In the forth chapter, these arguments are illustrated in reference to the project ‘Reimagining the Mosque, Opening the City’, a series of public workshops I have planned and coordinated with a number of scholars and Muslim artists in Rome and Bologna, Italy.

Religious pluralism and imagination : towards a postsecular city

This study aims to analyze how the Al Bariyah Mosque is managed as a professional mosque model in the community of Hajimena Natar village, South Lampung, Lampung Province, Indonesia. The research was carried out using a qualitative method with a case study approach (single-case study). Sources of data were taken to several informants through in-depth interviews. The writer also took data by observation and document analysis to strengthen the interview data. All data were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman technique with the stages of collecting, reducing and analyzing data and drawing conclusions. Overall, the research findings found three forms of the Al Bariyah Mosque management process so that it becomes a professional mosque; the three approaches are i) direct supervision starting from planning to an evaluation of activities by mosque administrators, ii) involving the community activities in every planned mosque activity. , iii) establishing a transparent, professional and accountable mosque management. The findings in the study can be used as an example for other mosque administrators to manage mosques professionally in the community.

This article examines the Islamization of suburban space in southeast England. Its microgeographies of racialization challenge binary either/or logic, favoured by ‘mosque conflict’ approaches and instead demonstrate how residents’ negotiations are channelled through everyday both/and logic rooted in multiplicity and indeterminacy. A key element in negotiations is the ‘sometimes quality’ of the ‘Islamic Centre’ that allows it to be both a ‘mosque’ and ‘not-a-mosque’. Moreover, each of the differently positioned residents shows uneven discursive capacities for identity, belonging and community in relation to the Islamization of suburban space, and each is afforded differential empowerment and capabilities under social discourses of ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘tolerance’.
