Schools provide a key platform for promoting health literacy in young people Despite a long history of initiatives to create health promoting schools, and extensive literature on the construct of health literacy, there is much less research on using the school nursing workforce to promote health literacy, particularly in the English school context In this paper we review the relevant literature and distil key messages The school nursing workforce is small, and needs to work in partnership with other agencies While there are clear opportunities there are also constraints on what can be achieved As well as providing basic health information, for real health literacy to develop young people need to learn skills and become empowered to take action More research is needed to establish how school nurses can contribute to this in the broader context of health promoting schools

Schulgesundheitspflege und ihre Rolle bei der Förderung von Gesundheitskompetenz im Setting Schule – Erfahrungen aus der modellhaften Erprobung

Schon lange gelten Schulen als geeignetes Setting für die Gesundheitsförderung, aber erst allmählich rückt auch ihre Rolle bei der Förderung von Gesundheitskompetenz ins Blickfeld. Alle Personen in diesem Setting – insbesondere die Kinder und Jugendlichen – sollen darin gestärkt werden, gesundheitsrelevante Informationen zu finden, zu verstehen, zu bewerten und zu nutzen. Das soll ihnen ermöglichen, ihre Gesundheits- und Bildungschancen zu realisieren und zu erweitern, ihre Gesundheit zu erhalten, zu fördern und potenzielle Gesundheitsrisiken abzuwenden oder deren Auswirkungen abzumildern. Welchen Beitrag die Schulgesundheitspflege dazu leisten kann, soll anhand von Erfahrungen aus der modellhaften Erprobung in zwei deutschen Bundesländern dargelegt werden. Dabei wird aufgezeigt, wie die vielfältigen Potenziale von Pflegefachpersonen genutzt werden können, um den Herausforderungen bei der Förderung der Gesundheitskompetenz in Schulen künftig erfolgreich(er) begegnen zu können. 

School nurses can increase health literacy skills of their students through the effective design and delivery of health messages by following a few straightforward guidelines. This work can be performed both within and outside the health classroom and can have beneficial effects.

Promoting health literacy: A stratergy for school nurses

Bone marrow T-cell clonal expansion, immune phenotypes, and specificities at the single-cell level were determined in treatment-naïve multiple myeloma. Dominant T-cell clones rarely recognize antigens presented on myeloma cells, are not neoantigen-specific, and show low immune checkpoint expression.

Immune Phenotypes and Target Antigens of Clonally Expanded Bone Marrow T Cells in Treatment-Naïve Multiple Myeloma

Background: Background: In vivo models to study activation of human T cells or NK cells against malignancies depend on immune compromised mice in which a xeno-transplanted tumor is treated with allogeneic T cells not matching the HLA of the tumor. Immunologically, these models are far from representative. With the goal of developing a lymphoma-matching, humanized model system, we tested the potency of cryo-preserved, human CD34 + hematopoietic stem cells to engraft the murine bone marrow niche of immune compromised mice, which are known to take human tumor grafts at high rates, thus, allowing for autologous primary tumor grafts following BM engraftment. Aims: Aims: To develop and characterize a lymphoma-matching, humanized mouse model with funtinal immune cell subsets. Methods: Methods: We developed a method to isolate viable human CD34 hi and CD34 int cells from cryopreserved apheresis products of patients with BM infiltrating disease such as multiple myeloma and B-cell NHL. Colony-forming potential was assessed using CFU assays. Engraftment potential was tested by injecting irradiated NOD.Cg-Prkdc scid /SzJ (NSG) mice with CD34 hi or CD34 int populations and engraftment quality and duration was assessed by flow cytometry of murine peripheral blood and of spleen and BM post mortem. Results: Results: Initial frequency of CD34 + cells in cryopreserved apheresis products ranged from 1-5% and was enriched to > 96% CD34 hi cells after CD34 MACS separation.
