The Making of English National Identity

Conversational interview accounts were used to explore everyday understandings of political participation on the part of young white adults in England. Analysis focussed on dilemmatic tensions within respondents' accounts between values of active citizenship and norms of liberal individualism. Respondents could represent community membership as engendering rights to political participation, whilst also arguing that identification with local or national community militates against the formulation of genuine personal attitudes and rational political judgement. Respondents could represent political participation as a civic responsibility, whilst also casting political campaigning as an illegitimate attempt to impose personal opinions on to others. Formal citizenship education did not appear to promote norms of political engagement but rather lent substance to the argument that political decision-making should be based on the rational application of technical knowledge rather than on public opinion or moral principle. In conclusion we question whether everyday understandings of responsible citizenship necessarily entail injunctions to political action. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Englishness and the Study of Politics: The Social and Political Thought of Ernest Barker

"Sir Arthur Bryant and National History in Twentieth-Century Britain is a significant new study of the work of the popular historian and journalist, Sir Arthur Bryant (1899-1985). Since his death, scholarly interest in Bryant has focused on his Nazi sympathies in the late 1930s. Julia Stapleton broadens our understanding of the man and the writer. 

Stapleton illuminates Bryant's romantic ideal of his nation. She explores the historian's success in writing for a broad middlebrow audience, aided by his firsthand experience of two world wars; and she traces the decline of Bryant's authority beginning in the 1960s as the discipline of history diversified and new ties were forged between professional historians and popular readerships. 

Stapleton suggests that Bryant prefigured and sustained a form of nationalism that remained nascent within the British population (though not always its elites) deep into the twentieth century, as the Falklands episode and the recent resurgence of English national identity well illustrates. Twenty years after his death, when history has scaled new heights of popularity, a study of the historian whose work made perhaps the largest public impact in twentieth-century Britain could not be more timely."

Sir Arthur Bryant and national history in twentieth-century Britain

This article explores some of the tensions and interaction between two rival conceptions of the relationship between citizenship and patriotism in twentieth-century England. Thefirst was widespread among the intellectual elite and greatly qualified the role of patriotism in sustaining a higher ideal of citizenship. The second was generally the preserve ofpopular writers and activists who conceived citizenship in terms ofpatriotic attachment to the English and English-British nation. However, the article maintains that the Edwardian intellectual elite often assumed an homogeneous national culture as the basis of suc- cessful citizenship, both local and international. In this regard, despite subjection to increasing strain, continuity as much as change is apparent in conceptions ofcitizenship up to and including the interventions of Enoch Powell in the debate over mass immigration. Subsequent attempts to ground citizenship in difference rather than sameness have greatly intensified the tension with a more persistent culture ofpatriotism. In a recent study Krishan Kumar has argued convincingly that a shared national identity in England is little more than a century old. Against a growing trend of medievalists to locate the origins of Englishness as far back as the age of Bede, and early modernists to favour the sixteenth century in this regard, Kumar emphasizes the 'moment' of English nationhood as the turn of the nineteenth century and the erosion of British industrial and imperial supremacy. Previously, English national awareness had been weak due to a range of competing loyalties - supra-national and sub-national; England's ascendancy within the wider British nation also served to suppress its development. Even when national consciousness flowered in England in the late nineteenth century its expression was typically cultural, in the longer term remaining distinct from the more political varieties of continental nationalism to which - for a short while - it bore some resemblance.1 However, Kumar's analysis considerably underplays widespread ambivalence
