The authors summarize the career counseling and development literature that appeared during 2000 in refereed journals, book chapters, and full-length books. The review of literature is divided into 5 major categories: (a) theoretical and conceptual advances, (b) career counseling and development of identified populations, (c) assessment in career counseling and development, (d) career counseling programs and interventions, and (e) resources for the professional development of career counselors and vocational psychologists.

Employability Skill Acquisition of Career and Technical Education Students

Career centers in the United States developed in communitybased organizations in the early 1900s and later moved into educational institutions. This article profiles these career centers with respect to their history, their current scope and function, and ways in which technology and the global economy will affect their future operations. Studies by the National Association of Colleges and Employers and other reports are summarized and the profile of one comprehensive university career center is described. It concludes with a vision statement for future career centers.

Current Status and Future Development of Career Centers in the United States

Economic and workplace change, changing patterns of employment and increasing demands on employees within organisations, are all factors contributing to the growing demand for career guidance and development services. Recent research in America has demonstrated both the lack of career guidance services and appropriate training for career practitioners. In addition, the research indicates that dissatisfaction with the existing training available for career practitioners worsens the problem. This article focuses on this problem and explores the changes in the nature of work that are impacting on the demand for career guidance practitioners. The author investigates aspects of the training dilemma and describes the outcomes of one particular program of career guidance training at Master’s level at an Australian university.

Perceptions of Training Needs of Career Guidance Personnel before and after a University Program.

As a result of internationalization, globalization, and a demographic change of population, Japanese people have been forced to equip themselves with competencies for adapting to a transition from traditional to post-modern employment conditions. In situations of rapid change such as these, it is widely recognized that the services of well-trained career counsellors and practitioners are urgently needed. The purpose of this article is to outline the issues relevant to the professionalization of career counselling practitioners who are expected to acquire key competencies to help individuals develop and maintain their careers across the lifespan. The authors also present a brief history of the evolution of career practitioners in Japan, and a brief analysis of groups of workers who need such professional help.

A Perspective on Career Counselling in Japan

This article describes the collaborative efforts of the National Career Development Association, National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee, and Career Development Training Institute at Oakland University, which resulted in the emergence and recognition of the important role of career development facilitators (CDFs). The development of the CDF competencies, curriculum, and certification is summarized, and examples of counselor-facilitator collaboration are provided.
