Exploring Tensions between Teachers' Grammar Teaching Beliefs and Practices.

Objective This study investigated whether altruistic social interest behaviors such as engaging in helping others were associated with better physical and mental health in a stratified random sample of 2016 members of the Presbyterian Church throughout the United States. Methods Mailed questionnaires evaluated giving and receiving help, prayer activities, positive and negative religious coping, and self-reported physical and mental health. Results Multivariate regression analysis revealed no association between giving or receiving help and physical functioning, although the sample was highly skewed toward high physical functioning. Both helping others and receiving help were significant predictors of mental health, after adjusting for age, gender, stressful life events, income, general health, positive and negative religious coping, and asking God for healing (R2 =.27). Giving help was a more important predictor of better reported mental health than receiving help, and feeling overwhelmed by others' demands was an independent predictor of worse mental health in the adjusted model. Significant predictors of giving help included endorsing more prayer activities, higher satisfaction with prayer life, engaging in positive religious coping, age, female gender, and being a church elder. Frequency of prayer and negative religious coping were not related to giving help. Conclusions Helping others is associated with higher levels of mental health, above and beyond the benefits of receiving help and other known psychospiritual, stress, and demographic factors. The links between these findings and response shift theory are discussed, and implications for clinical interventions and future research are described.

An investigation of computer anxiety by gender and grade

It has been reported that the proportion of computerphobic adults, including those comprising the population of first-year university students, remained fairly constant over several years preceding 1992, with estimates ranging from 25% to 50%. There has been a rapid increase in availability of computers during the following years and it was predicted that the incidence of computerphobia will have declined since 1992. Self-report computer anxiety (CA) scores obtained for five samples of first-year university students between 1992 and 1998 confirmed a reduction in mean levels of CA and in the proportion of computerphobic students over that period. However, the overall reduction in CA concealed a widening gap between mean CA scores of female and male students (p<0.01). Furthermore, female representation in the group at the high-scoring (computerphobic) end of the CA scale increased from 1992 to 1998 (p<0.001).

Coupled with this increase in the number of computers in schools is a concurrent increase in students' involvement in computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and computer-assisted guidance systems. Several studies (Jordan & Stroup, 1982; Maurer, 1983; Rohner & Simonson, 1981) have established that individuals often exhibit a complex array of emotional reactions (including fear) in situations requiring the use of computers. Furthermore, these fears and apprehensions, defined by Maurer (1983) as computer anxiety , may occur even when the situations pose no immediate or real threat. The reality of computer anxiety in students also was noted in the computer literacy objectives developed by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium's (MECC) Computer Literacy Project and reported by Klassen (1983). Two of the core objectives developed in the MECC project were (a) students not developing feelings of anxiety from computing experiences and (b) the students feeling confident about their computer abilities. Students experiencing computer anxiety may avoid interacting with computers in any setting and thereby eliminate current educational opportunities and possible future career choices. Therefore, it is important for counselors to be able to identify students who experience fears and apprehensions regarding computers. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of an instrument designed to identify computer-anxious students in Grades 4-8 as well as to provide counselors with information on how to use the instrument. A discussion follows regarding the use of computers in schools including a rationale for counselor involvement in this educational trend.
