CdZnTe background measurements at balloon altitudes
A. M. Parsons,Scott Barthelmy,Lyle M. Bartlett,F. Birsa,Neil Gehrels,Juan E. Naya,J. Odom,S. Singh,Carl Michael Stahle,Jack Tueller,Bonnard J. Teegarden +10 more
- 18 Oct 1996
TL;DR: In this paper, preliminary results from the first CdZnTe background measurements made by a balloon instrument are presented and contributions from different background processes are discussed, which are essential to determine which physical processes make the most important background contributions and are critical in the design of future scientific instruments.

Review of crystal diffraction and its application to focusing energetic gamma rays
Robert K. Smither,P.B. Fernandez,Tim Graber,Peter von Ballmoos,Juan E. Naya,F. Albernhe,G. Vedrenne,Mohamed Faiz +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the basic features of crystal diffraction and their application to the construction of a diffraction lens for focusing energetic gamma rays are described using examples from the work performed at the Argonne National Laboratory.
Crystal diffraction lens telescope for focusing nuclear gamma rays
Robert K. Smither,P.B. Fernandez,Tim Graber,Peter von Ballmoos,Juan E. Naya,F. Albernhe,G. Vedrenne,Mohamed Faiz +7 more
- 01 Aug 1996
TL;DR: A crystal diffraction lens was constructed at Argonne National Laboratory for use as a telescope to focus nuclear gamma rays as mentioned in this paper, which consisted of 600 single crystals of germanium arranged in 8 concentric rings.
Performance of advanced Ge spectrometer for nuclear astrophysics
Pierre Jean,Peter von Ballmoos,G. Vedrenne,Bonnard J. Teegarden,Juan E. Naya +4 more
- 18 Oct 1996
TL;DR: In this article, a next generation telescope for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy is presented, where the sensitivity for narrow lines is based on estimates of the background level and the detection efficiency.

Gamma-ray background lines in balloon- and satellite-borne GE spectrometers
Juan E. Naya,Pierre Jean,Neil Gehrels,S. Slassi-Sennou,Bonnard J. Teegarden,Jack Tueller,G. Vedrenne,Peter von Ballmoos +7 more
- 18 Oct 1996
TL;DR: In this article, the background spectrum in balloon and satellite Ge spectrometers consists of a continuum with discrete nuclear gamma-ray lines superimposed, and tools for estimating these background lines in different spectrometer configurations are provided.
