Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in women worldwide. In Chile, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women of reproductive age, causing more than 600 deaths annually. This study was carried out to determine the burden and confirm the predominant human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes among women presenting for cervical cancer screening in public health services in Chile. Women aged 18–64 years residing in the north and central areas covered by six primary care centers of Santiago, Chile, were invited to participate from March 2014 to August 2015. Cervical swabs were examined both HPV genotyping by PCR and Reverse Line Blot, and cervical cytology by Pap testing. A total of 1738 women were included in this study: 11.1 % were HPV positive, 9.7 % were high-risk types positive, 3.2 % were low-risk types positive, 1.4 % were Pap positive and 0.9 % were positive by both tests. The four most predominant genotypes were 16, 66, 51 and 59, with prevalence of 2.8, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.2 %, respectively. Multiple HPV infections were detected among 3.8 % participants. Age-specific prevalence of HPV showed a peak in HPV infection at younger ages (≤30 years), declining to a plateau in middle age. Among women with normal cytology, the 9.4 % were HPV positive, while 58.3 % of women with abnormal cytology were HPV positive. These findings show new epidemiological data confirming HPV 16 and 66 as the most predominant genotypes in Chile. These data are important for design successful strategies for prevention of cervical cancer in Chile.

Specific Human Papillomavirus Genotypes Isolated from Cervical Cancer Specimens in Calabar, Nigeria

Cervical cancer is a virally mediated disease with the majority of cases due to the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infections are the most prominent sexually transmitted diseases among college-aged women. Although HPV vaccines such as Gardasil afford women with a valuable method of cancer prevention, vaccination rates are often incomplete or inadequate. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an interactive, information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) based, multimodal program to promote Gardasil use among 62 undergraduate women enrolled at the University of Connecticut. Secondary aims targeted additional health behaviors, including risky sexual practices and Pap Screen utilization. Participants were randomly assigned to a single-session, active intervention group or an attention control group and were assessed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at a 1-month follow-up. At baseline, a majority of participants demonstrated high levels of vaccine knowledge, low mastery of HPV/cervical cancer information, and ambivalence about pursuing vaccination. Following the intervention, the IMB group demonstrated increased levels of HPV/cervical cancer and Gardasil knowledge, higher levels of self-reported motivation and intention to get vaccinated, and more positive attitudes toward vaccination. In addition, women in the IMB group demonstrated greater intentions to engage in regular screening in accordance with screening guidelines. These results provide partial support for an IMB-based intervention in helping elucidate factors that impact young women’s decision to get vaccinated and engage in cancer prevention. Findings may help guide the development of a cost-effective, cancer preventive program that can be easily disseminated and implemented in university clinics and health centers.

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent female cancer worldwide The majority of cases appear between the age of 30 and 50 Human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a central role in cervical cancer with 997% of HPV DNA identified in invasive cervical carcinomas The prevalence of the HPV infection varies substantially among countries and according to age and lifestyle HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection among males and females with a 70% higher incidence in sexually active females This study aimed to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus in young university women by analyzing the correlation between Papanicolaou (PAP)-stained cervical tests and HPV detection by genotyping, as well as other risk factors A total of 200 women aged between 18 and 25 years were enrolled in this study, which took place between September 2008 and May 2009 at the Universidad de Tarapaca, Arica, Chile Results of the PAP smears showed that 975% of cells had normal characteristics, although an inflammatory pattern was noted The prevalence of generic HPV infection was 35% when testing for HPV DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method An analysis of the genotype of infected female individuals indicated that high-risk HPV types, such as HPV 16 and 31 were present in 4284 and 1429% of females, respectively, and low-risk types such as HPV 6, in 1429% Only one sample with differentiated non-HPV (1429%) was found A 95% correlation between PAP-stained cervical tests and the method of testing for HPV was observed Using the PCR method, it was found that of the 195 negative PAP smears, 5 were positive for HPV and two of the samples that were positive for ASC-US were also positive A significantly increased (P<005) HPV infection risk was observed in the 18-21 age group with a higher prevalence (7140%) when compared to the 22-25 age group (286%) A significant (P<0042) difference was found between smoking and HPV infection In conclusion, a significant (P<005) correlation was found between PAP and PCR methods for HPV testing in young university women A significant correlation between smoking and HPV was detected, whereas no difference was noted with other parameters
