A method, apparatus and computer program product for providing partial packet recovery (PPR) for wireless networks is presented. PPR incorporates an expanded physical layer (PHY) interface that provides PHY-independent hints to higher layers about the PHY's confidence in each bit it decodes, and a technique to recover data even when a packet preamble is corrupted and not decodable at the receiver. Also described is an asynchronous link-layer automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol built on PPR that allows a receiver to compactly encode a request for retransmission of only those bits in a packet that are likely in error.

The memory device may include a memory cell array, and a decision unit configured to read first data from the memory cell array via a first channel, perform at least one of a hard and soft decision on the first data using a first number of decision levels set based on characteristics of the first channel, read second data from the memory cell array via a second channel, and perform a soft decision on the second data using a second number of decision levels set based on characteristics of the second channel.

A soft symbol decoder for use in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system. The decoder generates soft symbol values for a digital signal that represents a number of source bits. The source bits are transmitted as symbols in corresponding to points in a signaling constellation. Soft metrics are determined by searching for all possible multi-dimensional symbols that could have been transmitted. The method includes transmitting a sample of the multi-dimensional symbol using K transmit antennas. The multi-dimensional symbol is represent-able as a complex, K-dimensional vector x. Each vector component of vector x represents a signal transmitted with one of the K transmit antennas. After transmission through a communication channel, a sample corresponding to the transmitted sample is received. The received sample is represented by a complex, N-dimensional vector y, where N is the number of receive antennas in the MIMO system. After the sample is received, a soft metric L(b i ) is determined for each bit b i encoded by x according to the equation: L ⁡ ( b i ) = σ - 2 · ( min x j | b i = - 1 ⁢  y - Hx j  2 - min x j | b i = + 1 ⁢  y - Hx j  2 ) , , and ⁢ ⁢ x j 
represents all possible values for x. In addition, a reduced complexity method is used for providing soft metric values in the MIMO system. This exemplary aspect reduces the complexity of the above computations from 2 BK to 2 B(K−1) , where B is the number of bits transmitted per symbol per antenna.

Apparatus and method that recovers complex symbols transmitted through a propagation channel as modulated symbols impressed on a carrier signal and distinguished by respective channelization codes, comprising: a path estimator (504) that selects at least one multi-path delay for received complex symbols; a rake process or (502) that multiplies chips in a chip sequence with at least a corresponding channelization code based on at least one multi-path delay selected by the path estimator and generates a set of symbols corresponding to the channelization codes and multi-path delays; a channel estimator (508) that generates estimates of an impulse response of the propagation channel for the corresponding multi-path delay; a combiner (506) that multiplies symbols for a multi-path delay with complex conjugates of corresponding impulse response estimates generated by the channel estimator and reproduces the modulated symbols that were transmitted.

A bit error position is estimated. The estimation method includes generating data indicative of a substantial number of bit error locations in data frames. The generation of the data includes re-encoding decoded bit stream, mapping the bit stream to a first set of symbols, and determining a soft decision distance between a second set of symbols received through a data transmission channel and the first set of symbols. The generated data is then used to estimate the bit error locations. The estimation process includes capturing metric data for each bit in the data frame and obtaining derivative of the metric data. The derivative may be filtered for further processing. Error position estimation criteria may then be applied to estimate the bit error positions.
