A self-supporting pipe rupture and whip restraint system (10) for a process fluid pipe (12) of a nuclear reactor steam generator pressure vessel (14) includes a guard pipe (26) concentrically disposed about the process pipe (12) so as to entirely encase the process pipe (12) from the pressure vessel nozzle 18 to a terminal end fitting component (36) disposed exteriorly of the reactor facility building wall (32), the guard pipe (26) being integrally fixed to the process pipe (12) through means of the nozzle (18) and the component (36). Under postulated rupture conditions of the process pipe (12), pipe whipping of the process pipe (12) is restrained by the guard pipe (26), and the process fluid effluent from the process pipe (12) is contained within the guard pipe (26). Leak detection apparatus (50) is operatively associated with the annular space (30) defined between the process pipe (12) and the guard pipe (26) so as to detect ruptures or fractures within either the process pipe (12) or the guard pipe (26). The provision of a 90° elbow bend section (52) within the system also facilitates thermal expansion of the process pipe (12) relative to the guard pipe (26) without requiring conventional expansion joints or expansion bellows.

A plurality of data inputs are connected to the monitoring device for receiving information on the operating parameters of the device. The data inputs include an operator input. A control unit is connected to the data inputs and has an interconnected central processor, input/output control system, and graphics generation and video overlay system. Data outputs are connected to the input/output control.

A coupling device for installation in a building wall or floor to provide a passthrough opening for pipes, tubing, and the like comprises an axially elongated, plastic tubular housing with a radially extending mounting flange and having open first end and a second end which is closed by a transverse wall. At least one tubular coupling element having an entrance end and an exit end is positioned within the housing to extend axially thereof with the entranceend of the coupling opening to the first end of the housing. Intumescent firestop material surrounds the coupling element and fills the space between thecoupling element and the outer housing. A tube member extends from the coupling element to the second end of the housing. After the coupling device is installed, the second end of the housing is cut away at the surface level of the partition to expose the tube member for connection to the associated piping system.

A submersible electric motor driven pump has a motor chamber and a pump chamber separated by a seal chamber. Inboard and outboard shaft seals(MS1,MS2) immersed in an oil buffer fluid within the seal chamber restricts the flow of liquid from the seal chamber into the pump and motor chambers. An integral or externally mounted pre-pressurized buffer fluid reservoir (PA) maintains a positive fluid pressure in the seal chamber relative to the external pressure at working depth, and maintains a suitable buffer fluid level within the seal chamber, in order to prevent the ingress of the pumped media through the outboard seal(MS2). A unique impeller design (631) circulates fluid within the seal chamber in the region of the outboard shaft seal (MS2), allowing continuous dry run operation when used in conjunction with an integrally cooled motor design. A cartridge shaft sleeve subassembly, having a bearing (3) configured between the inboard and outboard seals (MS1,MS2), facilitates maintenance.

An instrument probe contains a video camera and light source which is positioned in front of the camera for illuminating the passage being inspected, such as a bore or a casing. The power source for the instrument probe is located at the surface. A support cable contains an optical fiber for conducting camera signals to the surface and electrical conductors for conducting power from the surface to the instrument probe. The outer electrical conductor includes strands of copper alternating with and in electrical contact with strength member strands. The cable is enclosed in a stainless steel outer sheath. The support cable is coupled to the instrument probe by three fluid seals. The first seals the outer sheath in the probe. The second seals at the breakaway connection and the third seals at the probe bulkhead. The second and third seals include the use of adhesive caulking.

Monitoring instrumentation for a high-temp. nuclear reactor, esp. pebble bed reactor, has measuring and monitoring devices mounted in horizontal, vertical, radial and axial guides, from which they can be removed. Every guide associated with a measuring and monitoring position can receive at least one measuring and monitoring device. Pref. where repetitive surveillance is reqd., the devices may be removable from their guide ducts so that they can be replaced with viewing equipment. The guides may be formed in apertures or ducts through the reactor core itself or its components, or may be in tubes firmly incorporated in the reactor core or its components. Used as monitoring instrumentation for use during the entire life of a high-temp. reactor. Functional reliability is provided by the facility for removing, inspecting and replacing the monitoring equipment and substituting other equipment of a different kind in the same passage or duct.
