COX-2 inhibition improves immunotherapy and is associated with decreased numbers of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in mesothelioma. Celecoxib influences MDSC function
Joris D. Veltman,Margaretha E H Lambers,Menno van Nimwegen,Rudi W. Hendriks,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Joost P.J.J. Hegmans +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that celecoxib is a powerful tool to improve dendritic cell-based immunotherapy and is associated with a reduction in the numbers and suppressive function of MDSC, suggesting that immunotherapy approaches benefit from simultaneously blocking cyclooxygenase-2 activity.
Low-dose cyclophosphamide synergizes with dendritic cell-based immunotherapy in antitumor activity.
Joris D. Veltman,Margaretha E H Lambers,Menno van Nimwegen,Sanne de Jong,Rudi W. Hendriks,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Joost P.J.J. Hegmans +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that low-dose cyclophosphamide induced beneficial immunomodulatory effects by preventing the induction of Tregs, and as a consequence, cytotoxic T cell function was no longer affected and addition of cycloph phosphamide improved immunotherapy leading to an increased median and overall survival.
History of tuberculosis as an independent prognostic factor for lung cancer survival
Marlies E. Heuvers,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Joost P.J.J. Hegmans,Joris D. Veltman,André G. Uitterlinden,Rikje Ruiter,Eline M. Rodenburg,Albert Hofman,Marleen Bakker,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Bruno H. Stricker,Rob J. van Klaveren +11 more
TL;DR: The presence of a history of pulmonary tuberculosis may be an important prognostic factor in the survival of lung cancer.

Protein Profiling of Pleural Effusions to Identify Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Using SELDI-TOF MS
Joost P.J.J. Hegmans,Joris D. Veltman,Eric T. Fung,Thorsten Verch,Curtis Glover,Fujun Zhang,W. Jeffrey Allard,Davy T'Jampens,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Bart N. Lambrecht,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts +10 more
TL;DR: This study validates the use of SMRP as a diagnostic marker for pleural mesothelioma and furthermore suggests that Apo CI levels could be used in the future to discriminate pleural Mesothelin-related proteins from other causes of exudates.

Zoledronic acid impairs myeloid differentiation to tumour-associated macrophages in mesothelioma.
Joris D. Veltman,Margaretha E H Lambers,M. van Nimwegen,Rudolf W. Hendriks,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joost P.J.J. Hegmans,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that ZA leads to a reduction in macrophages and impairs polarisation towards an M2 phenotype, but this was associated with an increase in the number of immature myeloid cells, which might diminish the effects of ZA on survival.
