IT/IS strategy is of central importance to practice and many well-developed lines of research have contributed to our understanding of IT/IS strategy. However, throughout the last decade, digitalization has fundamentally transformed the business world and put into question traditional strategy wisdom. As information technologies are the driver of this digital transformation, we can expect an even more fundamental change in IT/IS strategy thinking. To verify this expectation, we undertook an in-depth, extensive review of the academic literature on this topic. Our review, which is time-framed to the years 2008–2018, distils five different directions in the development of IT/IS strategy research. It also identifies a shift in how IT/IS strategy is defined and investigated over this period. Moreover, we present an emerging debate on how digitalization challenges traditional IT/IS strategy wisdom. As this debate is still in its infancy, we take it further by entering into the larger discussion on digitalization, including digital innovation, digital ecosystems, and digital transformation. Building on this, we derive at deeper insights on how IT/IS strategy could, should, or should better not be understood in the digital age.

Literature review: Understanding information systems strategy in the digital age

Although studies targeting CIO’s leadership characteristics are numerous, studies examining CIOs’ leadership styles are scarce. Today’s CIOs are often members of the firm’s C-level executive team with a wide range of leadership capabilities and characteristics that are not much different from those of the CEOs. What, then, are the characteristics and leadership styles for those CIOs? This literature review study attempts to answer those two questions by examining prior research on these topics. First, we examine prior literature identifying all studied characteristics and then, propose four categories to group them into meaningful sets. Second, we identify what leadership styles are used by researchers. And while the general leadership field has been evolving over the past twenty years shifting its focus and introducing new leadership styles, CIOs' leadership research is still entrapped in the old school of thinking. Consequently, we intend to stimulate new thinking about studying CIOs’ characteristics and styles.

Ohne Steuerung des IT-Bereiches nach geschaftsorientierten Grundsatzen sind Projekte zur Digitalen Transformation uberhaupt nicht moglich. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschaftigt sich mit den Anforderungen an das IT-Management von kleineren und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) bei der Steuerung des IT-Bereiches. Anhand einer empirischen Erhebung wird die Situation im IT-Management von kleineren und mittleren Unternehmen analysiert. Anschliesend wird auf Basis der ermittelten Bedarfe ein kompaktes Konzept entwickelt, mit dem das IT-Management zielgerichtet die IT-Governance in solchen Unternehmen ausuben kann.

Digitalisierung für kleinere und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU): Anforderungen an das IT-Management

Die swissICT Fachgruppe IT-Servicemanagement – Themenbereich Bewusstsein hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, ein Rahmenwerk zur wertschopfungsorientierten Steuerung der IT zu entwickeln, und zwar unabhangig von der Breite der erbrachten Dienstleistungen oder Services und unabhangig von der Wertschopfungstiefe des IT-Providers. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt den aktuellen Stand der weitergehenden Arbeit und zeigt auf, in welche thematischen Perspektiven, Domanen und Elemente sich die IT-Wertschopfung gliedern lasst. Neben einer summarischen Darstellung des methodischen Vorgehens wird das Rahmenwerk an sich beschrieben. Ebenfalls wird die Dokumentation von CIOverview dargestellt, aber auch die Tailoring-Methode als Voraussetzung zur Adaptierung des Kennzahlensystems entsprechend der Wertschopfungstiefe des IT-Serviceproviders. Ferner wird auf Ausschnitte des Kennzahlensystems eingegangen und der Nutzen von CIOverview thematisiert.

CIOverview – Ein Rahmenwerk zur wertschöpfungsorientierten Steuerung der IT

Die heutigen Bestrebungen zur Digitalisierung und Autonomisierung im Kontext von Industrie 4.0 forcieren auch in der Logistik grundlegende Veränderungen. Neue Ansätze und technologische Weiterentwicklungen in diesem Zusammenhang versprechen dabei ein großes Potenzial zur Bewältigung der steigenden Komplexität und zur Lösung aktueller und künftiger Herausforderungen. Unternehmen müssen dazu jedoch über den aktuellen Hype hinausblicken und die Chancen und Gefahren der Industrie 4.0 erkennen, um Zielbilder zu definieren, die den Weg in die Welt von morgen vorzeichnen. Ziel der diesem Beitrag zugrunde liegenden Masterarbeit war es deshalb, eine systematische Vorgehensweise zu entwickeln, um Unternehmen bei der Identifikation und Kommunikation von relevanten Informationen zu unterstützen. Dabei werden konventionelle Ansätze des strategischen Technologiemanagements um eine anwendungs- und prozessorientierte Sichtweise auf die Intralogistik erweitert. Die Ergebnisse entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit einem Unternehmen der Automobilindustrie sowie einem Forschungsprojekt an einer Universität und wurden sowohl wissenschaftlich als auch anwendungsbezogen validiert und verprobt. 

Strategische Technologiefrüherkennung für die Intralogistik 4.0 in der Nutzfahrzeugindustrie

Until today no consensus has been found regarding the contents of IT strategies. This results in uncertainty when formulating the topical areas of IT strategy documents. The Special Interest Group (SIG) “Strategisches Informationsmanagement (SIM)” (Strategic Information Management) of the “Gesellschaft für Informatik” (German Informatics Society)” addresses this gap by developing a framework that defines generic perspectives, domains, and elements of an IT strategy. Within the group, researchers and practitioners bundle their insights and experiences in the development of the framework named “StratIT”. We report on the current status of work and develop a structured basis for discussion. In addition, we describe the methodical and scientific foundations and the “modus operandi” of the SIG. Our intent is to communicate the perceived problem, our approach, and the developed artifact to an international audience, to get feedback and also to exchange ideas.

Dieses dient dazu, die Erstellung von IT-Strategien zu unterstutzen. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt den aktuellen Stand der Arbeit und zeigt im Sinne einer Diskussionsgrundlage auf, in welche thematischen Perspektiven, Domanen und Elemente sich IT-Strategien gliedern lassen. Daruber hinaus werden die methodische und wissenschaftstheoretische Fundierung sowie der „modus operandi“ der Arbeitsgruppe beschrieben. Das Rahmenwerk „StratIT“ entsteht in Zusammenarbeit von Forschern und Praktikern. Vorbemerkung: Die Fachgruppe Strategisches Informationsmanagement der Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI-Fachgruppe SIM) stellt eine Expertengruppe aus Praktikern, Beratern und Wissenschaftlern mit langjahriger Erfahrung im Themenbereich dar. Die Beteiligten entwickeln oder entwickelten IT-Strategien bzw. wurden in entsprechende Entwicklungen einbezogen. Die Mischung, die sich aus unterschiedlichen Rollen und der Herkunft der Beteiligten ergibt, tragt zur Sicherstellung der Betrachtung aus verschiedenen Perspektiven im Sinne einer Triangulation bei. Die Fachgruppe entwickelt StratIT als ein Referenzmodell fur Strategieinhalte im Sinne einer Orientierungshilfe zur Vereinfachung der IT-Strategieerstellung. Sie trifft sich dazu viertelbis halbjahrlich.

Autonomization and digitization in the context of Industry 4.0 are fundamentally changing logistics, with new approaches in this context offering great potential for intralogistics to solve the emerging challenges. However, companies need to look beyond the hype and recognize the opportunities and threats arising from Industry 4.0 and define target images that chart the way forward into the new world. For this reason, a methodical approach is required that efficiently guides a company through the identification of new technological opportunities for its intralogistics and additionally takes into account relevant information to increase people's acceptance. Therefore, the aim of this work is to develop a standardized method that provides a guideline for the design of a company-specific technology vision for intralogistics. Techniques of technology management are used and extended with a focus on a company-specific application in intralogistics. The method is applied to the logistics of a commercial vehicle manufacturer and expert surveys are used for an iterative optimization. Conventional approaches to strategic technology management are thus extended and a process-specific application view in intralogistics is made possible.
