The ZrCo–H2 system was investigated in this study owing to its importance as a suitable candidate material for storage, supply, and recovery of hydrogen isotopes. Desorption hydrogen pressure-composition isotherms were generated at six different temperatures in the range of 524–624 K. A van’t Hoff plot was constructed using the plateau pressure data of each pressure-composition isotherms and the thermodynamic parameters were calculated for the hydrogen desorption reaction of ZrCo hydride. The enthalpy and entropy change for the desorption of hydrogen were found to be 83.7 ± 3.9 kJ mol−1 H2 and 122 ± 4 J mol−1 H2 K−1, respectively. Hydrogen absorption kinetics of ZrCo–H2 system was studied at four different temperatures in the range of 544–603 K and the activation energy for the absorption of hydrogen by ZrCo was found to be 120 ± 5 kJ mol−1 H2 by fitting kinetic data into suitable kinetic model equation.

Korea is supposed to develop the ITER tritium storage and delivery system (SDS), which is one of the main components of the ITER tritium plant. For successful procurement, there are several ongoing R&D activities in the detailed design phase. Investigation of design parameters of the storage and delivery beds has been performed. Small and large-scale mock-ups of ZrCo beds are used to test the capability of desirable rapid delivery and recovery performance and to establish the pertinent procedure of in-bed calorimetry. An experimental apparatus is prepared to develop the integration and verification technologies for the unit processes of the tritium SDS. The performance test of a tritium-compatible metal bellows pump is examined, and the results show a reasonable agreement with the catalog data of the pump. A tritium storage and delivery bed simulator has been developed to simulate various bed operation scenarios under normal and abnormal conditions. A prototype of the SDS simulator is fabricated, and the bed operation scenario generation program to be applied to this simulator is developed. The design requirement of the tritium loading station (TLS) calorimeter is prepared based on a benchmarking mock-up calorimeter, namely, Korea Electric Power Research Institute Tritium Laboratory (KEPTL) calorimeter. Documents for the procurement of the TLS calorimeter will be developed through the experience on the KEPTL calorimeter operation.

ITER storage and delivery system R&D in Korea

A new strategy for remarkably improving anti-disproportionation performance and cycling stabilities of ZrCo-based hydrogen isotope storage alloys by Cu substitution and controlling cutoff desorption pressure

Three models of fast heat transfer response ZrCo hydride bed were tested to examine their hydriding and dehydriding performance, and the hydrogen retention of the ZrCo during multiple hydriding and dehydriding operation. The design features of the present models are (i) very thin layer (3 mm) of ZrCo powder packing, (ii) large heating area in contact with the ZrCo powder (2.04 cm 2 /g-ZrCo), and (iii) large filter surface area (1.76 cm 2 /g-ZrCo) to reduce pressure drop across the filter during hydrogen delivery. To evaluate pumping conductance effect during dehydriding with vacuum pumping, two sizes of hydrogen pumping line were applied. Extremely high delivery rate of 1.3 × 10 −2  Pam 3 /s for 90% delivery was observed in the 2nd and 3rd model tests. Hydrogen retention of ∼1.5 × 10 −2  L-STP/g-ZrCo (∼2 L-STP/bed model) was observed in all models after multiple repetitions of hydridings and dehydriding under vacuum pumping: 25 cycles (1st model), 14 cycles (2nd model) and 70 cycles (3rd model). It was experimentally confirmed that the differences in the delivery rate and hydrogen retention the three model beds were predominantly generated by the difference in the pumping conductance (effective pumping speed) in the delivery pipeline.

Hydriding/dehydriding characteristics on fast heat transfer response ZrCo bed for ITER

Korea has been operating four units of CANDU nuclear power plant since 1983. Tritium generated in the heavy water of the plant has been removed by Wolsong TRF (tritium removal facility) since 2007. Korea has developed a 500-kCi BU-type tritium transport container. Furthermore, strictly controlled tritium release to the environment from the CANDU nuclear power plant in Korea will also be a helpful experience for ITER. The BU-type tritium transport container will be unpacked and the quantity of tritium in the metal tritides of the primary vessel will be measured accurately before the tritium is liberated by heating the metal tritides. In the ITER fuel cycle plant, Korea is responsible for the development and supply of the SDS (fuel storage and delivery system). We present the on-going R&D progress to use a non-nuclear material ZrCo for the storage and delivery of tritium. Especially we present the delivery characteristics of the ZrCo hydride bed by considering the fueling requirement and maintainability of the ZrCo hydride bed. We also present various test results for the experimental ZrCo beds and the test programs for the leak tight large scroll pump with a magnetic coupling-drive.
